Una Sola Cosa - One Thing

(Torre Morisca y su reloj en el antiguo Malecón - Morisca Tower and its clock on the old Malecon, Guayaquil 1939)
No preciso tu boca mentirosa,
de tus ojos pequeños la tristeza
yo no quiero beberme tu belleza
necesito de ti una sola cosa...

Mucho menos requiero mariposa
arrancarte las alas con presteza
ni persigo llenarte de aspereza;
necesito de ti una sola cosa...

Necesito un minuto nada más
de los días que tú a mi lado estás;
un minuto volverlos a vivir...

un minuto volverte a enamorar,
guardarlo y no dejarlo escapar
y mirarlo hasta la hora de morir.
(Pintura del artista ruso Serge Marshennikov)

I don’t need your lying mouth,
nor the sadness in your small eyes;
I do not wish to drink your beauty—
I need only one thing from you.

Much less do I require, butterfly,
to tear away your wings in haste,
nor do I seek to burden you with harshness—
I need only one thing from you.

I need but a single minute
from the days you are by my side;
one minute to live them once again...

one minute to fall in love anew,
to keep it, never let it slip away,
and behold it until the hour of death.

y que al volverte miel me volvía oso;

que si soy un loco tú eres mi locura;

You say I am ridiculous, a fool,
(Pintura del artista ruso Serge Marshennikov)
that you laughed at all my verses,
that I was only an ornament you kept,
and soon you grew weary of me.

That seeing you drove me mad,
and when you turned to honey, I became a bear;
that I was a thorny lemon tree,
and you were the sweet water of coconut.

That I was the weed you cut away,
a black cloud that dimmed your grace,
the gift that heaven had bestowed,
and that with your words you deceived me.

But you forget to mention your eyes,
that when I drew near, they softly closed,
and how your hands trembled
when my lips stole a lemon-red kiss.

That you gave me your tenderness first,
and that my lyre once softened your soul.
Let me tell you swiftly:
if I am mad, you are my madness;
if I am a fool, you are my folly.

Mujer Misteriosa - Mysterious Woman

(Elevando la estatua de una mujer que porta la antorcha de la Libertad que está sobre la columna a los Próceres de la Independencia en el parque Centenario - Raising the statue of a woman carrying the torch of Liberty that is on the column to the Próceres de la Independencia in Centenario Park, Guayaquil 1917)

Intentando olvidarte anoche me encontraba
y soñé una mujer amable y misteriosa;

¿que si era sincera?... es mujer, la más franca;

con pasos encontrados entre nuestros caminos;

con sus suaves palabras la noche me alumbró;

que los sueños bonitos terminan al segundo;

muy triste entre las sombras de su ambiguo destino;

Last night I tried to forget you,
and I dreamed of a kind, mysterious woman;
I could not see her, yet I loved her still,
with her innocent kiss and her rose-like breast.

Her eyes shone bright, her soul was pure,
she loved me, and with tears she bathed my heart.
(Pintura del artista ruso Serge Marshennikov)
Was she sincere? She was a woman, the most frank—
I could not see her, yet I loved her still.

My furious, maddened mind sketched her,
with steps that crossed between our paths;
I could not see her, yet I loved her still,
with her skin of cotton and fingers like pines.

Just to embrace her and feel the gallop
of all the joy she gave,
was enough to lift my life to its summit—
I could not see her, yet I loved her still.

Her tender golden hair entwined me,
her soft words illuminated the night;
I could not see her, yet I loved her still,
for she never once replied with “no.”

Without asking, she gave me the flowers of her world...
“Promise me nothing,” I always whispered,
“for beautiful dreams end in a moment”—
I could not see her, yet I loved her still.

And I do not know from what place she came,
but she vanished in a moment of that same dawn,
sad among the shadows of her ambiguous fate.
Who was that woman? I do not know, I cannot guess—
I awoke and found your scent upon my pillow.

¡Mentira! - ¡Lie!

Mi cerebro no entiende tu partida;

Today you say goodbye, trembling,
while in horror my soul beholds you;
for you leave my life relentless, implacable—
I console myself by screaming it is a lie.

My brain cannot grasp your departure;
while your love dies, my anger flares,
with the anguish your wound inflicts upon me—
and even to the sky I shout it is a lie.

To stones, to books, to benches,
to children, to men, to ravines,
even to the dead I cry it is a lie.

It is a lie, a lie... I adore you!
and at night I wake like a madman and weep,
and to my pillow I cry it is a lie.

Me Muero - I die

El volcán es visible desde la ciudad en mañanas despejadas, Expedición Malaspina 1789-1794 dibujado por Fernando Brambila - View of Chimborazo with part of the east coast of the Guayas River taken from the Observatory House; the hills of Durán are observed. The volcano is visible from the city on clear mornings, Malaspina Expedition 1789-1794 drawn by Fernando Brambila)

The Chimborazo volcano 142 km from almost the same place where the Malaspina expedition was engraved, Guayaquil 2012)
Te miro sin mirarte y desespero
sabiéndote imposible como un sueño;

¿Complace observar cómo me despeño?

¡Oh, dime!... ¿fue mentira quizás eso?
¿y qué me dices tú del primer beso,
del cariño que no regresará?

Y no te quiero no porque no quiero;
abrázame y mi cuerpo te dirá:
"si no te quiero muero... ¡yo me muero!"

(Pintura del artista canadiense Paul Kelly)

I gaze at you without gazing, and despair,
knowing you are impossible, like a dream;
I’m dying to love you, yet I do not—
living like a flame upon the wood.

Your kisses vanish from January to January,
yet I am far from you, far from being yours.
Does it matter that I was the first?
Do you delight in watching me fall?

Oh, tell me—was that perhaps a lie?
and what of the first kiss,
of the affection that will not return?

And I do not love you—not because I do not wish to;
hold me, and my body will tell you:
“If I do not love you, I die... I die!”

A tu Regreso - At your return

(Río Guayas visto desde el Malecón hacia el Este se observan los cerros de Durán y al fondo el volcán Chimborazo visible en mañanas despejadas, Expedición Malaspina 1789-1794 dibujado por Fernando Brambila - Guayas River seen from the Malecon towards the East, the hills of Durán are observed and in the background the Chimborazo volcano visible on clear mornings, Malaspina Expedition 1789-1794 drawn by Fernando Brambila)

(Actualmente se colocan los pilares de la aerovía para cruzar a Durán en la orilla Este del Río Guayas - Currently the pillars of the airway are placed to cross Durán on the east bank of the Guayas River, Guayaquil 2019)

"¡Vuelve, vuelve!". Me vi gritando: "¡Vuelve,
nuevos trinos se oirán a tu regreso!"

You hear the trills in the morning
of the birds, but in my dwelling
it is your voice that overwhelms me
in my dark and consuming solitude.

When will you return to entwine
our mischievous hands with cruelty?
Will you return with the rain, to quicken
the calm backwater of our age?

Will you return with the nights serene?
Will you return like the sea to the sands?
Will you return like the prisoner set free,

to give me all your love in a single kiss?
“Come back, come back!” I found myself crying,
new songs will be heard at your return!

Ofrenda - Offering

(Piratas del Capitán Woodes Rogers despojando de sus joyas a algunas damas durante la invasión a la ciudad, Guayaquil Abril de 1709 - Pirates of Captain Woodes Rogers stripping some of their jewels during the invasion of the city, Guayaquil April 1709)

Hoy te vengo a confesar

Oh Lord, You who know the sorrow
that still wounds my heart,
so deeply it grieves me until I weep
and has turned bitter the faith I once held in You.

Oh Lord, today I come to confess
this anguish that grows each passing day,
robbing me of the joy of the world,
for cruelly it severs my happiness.

You already know it came unbidden,
that I loved her more than anything in this life,
that she left a deep mark upon me—

and as I feel death piercing me,
only my soul can I offer You,
for my heart I have already given to her.

Libertad - Freedom

You have never seen the cunning I possess—
to imagine us as two prisoners, escaping together;
you cannot imagine the dreams I carry
through your body as I run with you.

And I see myself climbing to your mouth,
or hiding in the cave of your navel,
or losing myself in the forest of desire,
to reach the love for which I pursue you.

Or climb the slope of your skirt,
or run across the field of your back,
and cross the blue frontier of your soul,

to gain my freedom,
to sleep in the shade of a palm,
to love you for eternity.

Mil Veces - A Thousand Times

y mil veces verdad y hasta yo mismo;

y mi vida y mi amor eres mil veces.

(Pintura del artista italiano Pino Daeni)

You a thousand times, my girl, in my world—
dim, errant, disoriented,
in the undecided existence of a wanderer,
and a thousand times, in love with you.

A thousand stars shining in the depths,
and in the peace of your immaculate breast,
and upon my guilty, dying skin
your name is engraved a thousand times.

Your presence is a thousand times a mirage,
and a thousand times true—even within myself;
you are earth, and even stardust,

the gradual shadow of a thousand cypresses,
my blood in a thousand crystal cups,
and my life, and my love, are a thousand times.

Estrellas - Stars

(Estadio Monumental de Barcelona S. C. en construcción - Monumental Stadium of Barcelona S. C. under construction, Guayaquil 1985)

(Noche Amarilla, Estadio Monumental de Barcelona S. C. - Yellow Night, Estadio Monumental de Barcelona S. C, Guayaquil 2013)

Si algún día deseas las estrellas
pues estira los brazos lo que puedas...
sé exigente y ni un poco retrocedas
o tendrás por rival a todas ellas.

Trátalas como tratan las doncellas;
vale más el esfuerzo que monedas...
ni siquiera un descanso te concedas
si algún día deseas las estrellas.

Sé optimista conforme a tu futuro,

y recuerda mirar hacia adelante
y por siempre tendrás tus manos llenas.

If one day you wish for the stars,
then stretch your arms as far as you can;
be demanding, never retreat—
or you will find yourself rivaling them all.

Treat them as you would maidens fair;
for effort is worth more than coins.
Grant yourself no rest
if one day you wish for the stars.

Be optimistic in regard to your future,
ignore the mediocre, leap over the wall,
defeat time and shatter chains...

set failure aside, remain steadfast,
remember always to look ahead—
and forever your hands will be full.
