Religión - Religion

(Templo de San Francisco, donde se encontraban los restos del Prócer José Joaquín de Olnedo que se quemaron junto con la iglesia en el incendio de 1896 y Plaza Rocafuerte - Temple of San Francisco, where the remains of the Prócer José Joaquín de Olnedo were found that were burned together with the church in the fire of 1896 and Rocafuerte Square, Guayaquil 1880)

porque la vida es una es llena de tristeza;

en que la luna es una suspendida en el cielo;

sólo una vez se nace... sólo una vez se muere;
solo...

(Pintura del artista norteamercano
Daniel Gerhartz)

A religion of loneliness is professed within my being,
for life is one, and it is full of sadness;
as in the world, many—alike yet different—
and as I walked, they set me to live alone.

Optimizing all, I find my comfort
in the moon, one, suspended in the sky;
one single love that dissolves in time,
for all things are reduced to one.

One silence alone; only once you love,
only once are you born, only once do you die;
that is why I sing, and I cannot complain,
for in following my path I may remain:
alone.

Tu Nombre - Your Name

The hill of the Estero that began to be exploited in 1903 currently disappeared, Guayaquil 1910 1920)

del legendario y auténtico chagra;

Your name resounded beneath equinoctial skies,
an accelerating cataclysm summoned your presence
upon the eroded cliffs of Colonche,
to stir a thousand fantasies on idyllic, moonlit nights—
like the reflection of the mother cordillera
in the pupil of the legendary chagra;
like the sun’s toasted mark upon the manly skin
of the fisherman cholo of Manabí.

Your words made the chimeric wind whistle
through the branches of ancestral ceibos,
green kings reigning over my desert hills,
to paint their scorched bodies
with watercolors of hope.
(Pintura del artista norteamericano Daniel Gerhartz)

Thus impregnated I carry you to my destiny
(I, more than ever, need you),
from the rivers of the Guayas basin
with their strength and drag,
and with the tenderness of a purple flower
at sunset upon the porch.

Find me there, in the south, where our wealth is stolen;
pierce my chest with your Jíbaro arrows,
abandon me deep within your jungles,
or I will journey to the moors,
confused with the flutter
of a majestic condor in the highlands,
solitary.

You will gather dreamlike, multicolored illusions
like shells upon the beaches of fantastic islands,
and I will arrive slowly, like a Galápagos tortoise,
to leave my volcanic footprint in time.

Initiate me in your genesis: mud and water,
ceramic identity, a vessel in my hands
imprinted with caresses of love,
pronouncing your name: you, you, you.

A name awakening April’s sparkles,
stirring in me the memory of half a century
of betrayals.
It is your name: “a love poem.”

Motivos - Motives

(Vista del Chimborazo al norte de la ciudad en una tarde despajada - View of the Chimborazo north of the city on a busy afternoon, Guayaquil 2018)
Te miro insistentementecuando el sol,
infantil, juega con los misterios
del moribundo manglar guayaquileño
y mientras la clorofila reverdece tu vientre
me pregunto:
hasta los horizontes ignotos de tu alma;

I look at you insistently
when the childish sun plays with the mysteries
of Guayaquil’s dying mangrove,
and while chlorophyll greens your womb
I wonder:
Why do I love you so much?
and the inclement truth sometimes resembles
the Andean scaffolding of your architecture.

My eyes stray, restless,
from the cold aluminum of your hands
to the unknown horizons of your soul;
irresistibly I ascend
the cruel snows of your body.

No cotton offspring of abandonment
approaches you,
nor do algorithmic movements
pause at my daring presence.
Beyond the vine of my dreams
you belong to me in the reality of my steps
upon Salinas’ sands in October—
volatile as the illusion of a shooting star,
yet permanent as the passing of time.
(Pintura del artista ruso
Vladimir Volegov)
Shy rabbit, transparent ice,
misty smallness,
you gaze at me from your burrow
of madrigals and pearls.
I seize your snowy hips,
I lose myself in the moor of your pupils,
I live in you as if climbing
the immensity of Chimborazo
from the tropical climates
of the coast.

Like the face of a loved one
never to be seen again,
I kidnap you in my mind
to hide you deep
within the Amazon rainforest,
to navigate your rivers—
and then I caress
your droplets of dew.
I divide you, analyze you, synthesize you,
and we lose ourselves in morning glares
until you break the charm
when you wickedly ask me:
“Why do you love me so much?”
And that, little star, is something
for which I find no answer.

Antesala de Dolor - Antechamber of Pain

(Puente de los baños del Salado - Bridge of the Salado baths, Guayaquil 1900)

Aquí estoy: en mis cuevas laberínticas
acumulando temas que me abrazan
como se amontonan los días del calendario
cerrando los ojos delirante de los tuyos.

Tú serás feliz, mientras tanto, a mí

Aquí estoy, aquí me deja tu capricho

y produzca poemas inefables

Here I am, in my labyrinthine caves,
(Pintura del artista ucraniano Michael Garmash)
gathering themes that embrace me,
like the days of the calendar piling up,
closing my eyes, delirious with yours.

You will be happy; meanwhile,
an aching darkness kisses my forehead,
and the wounds of memory break open,
until I bleed with your absence.

How long will your hands be missing,
shaping paper figures upon my rocks?
And if you never again brighten my cold home,
when shall I forget you?

Here I remain, abandoned by your whim,
between nothingness and the unknown,
in a place without time or exit,
and at the center of silence I wait for you.

What will you tell me—does my pain rhyme?
The cadence is gone, and it is likely
that in the night all my love may agonize,
and yield ineffable poems.

Rapsodia Cariñosa - Affectionate Rhapsody

(En 1884, don Leandro Serrano y Baltazár Aráuz reconstruyeron el puente destruido dos años antes - In 1884, Mr. Leandro Serrano and Baltazár Aráuz rebuilt the destroyed bridge two years before, Guayaquil 1892)

no ha temblado ante la fuerza de tu ternura;

Still your voice has not echoed in my ear,
nor the petals of your figure in my mind
have left upon my brief story
(Pintura del artista ucraniano
Michael I. Garmash)
a delicate image... and yet, I think of you.

My rough hands have never brushed
against your soft hands; my bitter gaze
has never met your serene eyes—
and despite it all, I miss you already.

Still the impassable wall of my character
has not trembled at the strength of your tenderness;
nor has this heart, enamored of the moon,
yet trembled to a ballad’s sound.

Nor have my pilgrim lips
given irrevocable promise before yours,
nor have I drifted upon your tides—
and contrary to all: I need you.

The clock has not yet struck the hour
to tell me I should go to your side,
nor has the relentless calendar hastened
the time for Saturday to arrive.

And perhaps when the awaited moment comes,
my body, absorbed, will be enraptured,
and my mouth will find no words to say:
“I need you, I think of you, I miss you.”
"I need you, I think, I miss you ...".

Instancias - Instances

innato, frecuente, desatendido
e irremediablemente condenado

y no sentirte llegar

solo.

This was my life:
Let the sunny days pass,
turned cloudy by loneliness and ignorance.
Forget the word love,
moored among stranded universes,
endure the indissoluble silence
of passionate dreams.
At every foolish step I found
the alternative of not facing myself
face to face, meaningless to my existence—
innate, frequent, unattended,
hopelessly condemned
to feed my bursts of anguish,
(Pintura del artista ruso
Serge Marshennikov)
a prisoner in the dusk constellations,
gazing through the inaccessible glass
of my own concentration camps,
watching how they poisoned my useless hope
with unhappiness.
Baptizing my initial
with unstoppable avalanches of legends,
fantastic, made real
in the disguised and helpless womb
of oblivion.

You were in my story:
A breeze that disturbed
the cold foundations of my abandonment,
the original stillness of my desires.
You came from an unknown place
of dizzying, allegorical tongues,
where poetry mingled with the air,
to behold you closely
in the obscure abbreviation of your genesis,
and lose myself among the ideological currents
of ironic speeches of clandestine apples,
not feeling you arrive
among light seagulls,
toward the final altar of my discordant passions,
to tense me in the epilogue
of anxious cedar and walnut seeds,
to cover my barren deserts
with your jungles green with tenderness,
to feed me with wild fruits
plucked from your tropical skin,
to sate me like a drug addict,
until even the stones lost their vice.
(I saw you depart like a comet,
leaving in its wake
the memory.)

This is my life:
To walk beneath the crackling rain,
like the carbon ghost of a cigar,
and inevitably let existence slip away—
alone.

Irrealizable - Unrealizable

(Los Baños del Salado, establecidos en 1860 por el coronel Eugenio Baumann de Metz  vendido a Belizario González en la época del presente grabado, se trata de la orilla este del estero del lado de la ciudad, el camino que se ve al fondo es la actual Av. 9 de Octubre y fue ordenada por Vicente Rocafuerte como extensión de la calle San Francisco en 1841, en el grabado superior se aprecia, en la orilla oeste, el peñón que fue comenzado a ser explotado en 1903 y que actualmente ha desaparecido - The Baños del Salado, established in 1860 by Colonel Eugenio Baumann de Metz sold to Belizario González at the time of the present engraving, is the east bank of the estuary on the side of the city, the road seen at the bottom is the current one Av. 9 de Octubre and was ordered by Vicente Rocafuerte as an extension of San Francisco Street in 1841, in the upper engraving you can see, on the west bank, the rock that was started to be exploited in 1903 and that has now disappeared, Guayaquil 1862)

Pensar:
que mis versos podrían caer
sobre tu piel fecunda y virgen
y brotarían manzanas ardientes
de una irreconciliable
fantasía de huertas
y cosecharíamos silencios
entre trigales dormidos

Creer:
que existe un Dios piadoso
arquitecto preciso de mi sino;
te llevaría ligada ligera
a mi inexacto cuello degollado

recorriendo tus constelaciones signales
descubriendo vías lácteas;
me escondería entre tus desnudos hemisferios
y me alimentaría...
de tu pequeña inmensidad
y colgaría la luna como un arete
y perezosamente
los universos te llenarían de besos.

Despertar:
en la más gregaria soledad;

To think:
that my verses might fall
upon your fertile, virgin skin,
and burning apples would sprout
from an irreconcilable orchard of fantasy,
and we would reap silences
among sleeping wheat fields.

To believe:
that there is a merciful God,
precise architect of my fate;
(Pintura del artista ruso Serge Marshennikov)
I would take you, lightly bound,
to my flawed, wounded throat,
join my hands,
prostrate upon my knees,
close my eyes—and in the space they enclose,
two seconds—
make you mine
forever,
and I would not cease to cry,
shouting “Amen.”

To dream:
of shooting stars
traversing your constellations,
discovering milky ways;
I would hide within your naked hemispheres,
and feed myself
on your small immensity,
and the moon would hang like an earring,
while lazily
the universes covered you with kisses.

To wake:
in the most gregarious solitude;
stunned I would watch
the suicidal sway
of a story that never came to be:
a banal thought...
an impossible yearning...
an unrealizable dream.

El Pecador - The Sinner

(La toma peruana de la ciudad se aprecia parte de la ciudad vieja y el polvorín en la cima del cerro Santa Ana - The Peruvian take of the city shows part of the old city and the powder magazine on the top of the Santa Ana hill, Guayaquil 1860)

Cinco horas:
El es así: común y corriente;
a venir a sufrir a éste mundo
¡Perióóóóódicooooo!
y lo peor de todo...

Nueve horas:
de la gente normal;
ayuna, no por penitencia
aunque en sus ojos inocentes y tristes
ha hecho nido
el silencio de Dios
(y el abandono del prójimo)
pero lo peor de todo...

Trece horas:
corriente.
- ¡Vete a trabajar vago!

no hago algo, cayendo desesperadamente
en el Pecado.

Five hours:
The hero everyone knows,
yet he wears no medal upon his chest—
ordinary, common;
without even looking I know him
by his hoarse voice.
Perhaps neither you nor I have woken,
but for half an hour he has—
the barefoot soldier,
waiting in his trench of drowsy bodies,
for a handout,
for the bus to fill
so he may sing or shout
with the same cry he was forced to bear
when he came to suffer in this world:
“Newspaper!”
And worst of all...

Nine hours:
The children of the terminal—
if you looked closer at their bruised legs...
“This stinking boy!”
They are carved of wood,
fashioned in the unconscious
of normal people.
He fasts, not by penance,
though in his innocent, sorrowful eyes
has nested
the silence of God
(and the abandonment of humankind).
But worst of all...

Thirteen hours:
Prisoners of money and boredom
step out to refresh themselves.
Now the poor man’s torturing sun
has cracked his skin,
breaking it like the Berlin Wall.
While the symphonies of the body
begin to delight in human pain,
the standard-bearers of concrete and glass towers
stroll through their masterpiece.
Despair forces the burned hand
of a common beggar to extend.
“Go to work, you lazy man!”
(As if a decent job awaited him).
But worst of all...

Twenty-two hours:
Pleasure hides beneath the sheets,
and the flesh is weak—
let he who is without sin cast the first stone.
In the dark corners where round deals are struck,
where the thirst of a vulgar world is quenched,
the sated, the so-called honest,
cry out indignantly: “Sinner!”
Yet where a woman hides
there lie a thousand love stories
in the honey of her breasts.
But worst of all...

Twenty-four hours:
The floor is as cold
as the lonely, desolate soul of the helpless.
At the threshold of some office
the worn-out curl up,
regardless of age, sex, or race—
(no creed, for there is nothing to believe in),
to scratch at the dreams of a cardboard bed
discarded in daylight.
And I, wandering through these hours—
worst of all,
I cannot recall why for these people
I do nothing,
falling desperately
into Sin.

Confidenciando - Confiding

Two photos where the houses painted by Ernest Charton appear in his 1849 painting on the Villamar estuary, now Loja Street between Rocafuerte and Panama, Guayaquil 1863)

Amiga: déjame cerrar los universos
y esconder la espuma en mis pasiones
para poder escribirte versos
y fundir para siempre
los corazones:

El tuyo y el mío, confidenciando;

Sandra.

Mi amor, recoge las manzanas caídas
y separa de tu cesto una sola para mí;
necesito la asfixia, las miradas perdidas
la terrible inconsciencia que esa noche sentí
porque mis días se mueren lejanos
sin aliento,
sin vida,
sin sueños,
sin ti.

Beloved: let me close the universes,
hide the foam within my passions,
so I may write you verses
and forever fuse
our hearts:

Yours and mine, confiding—
hopelessly meeting
in the footprints that sing...
my beloved, loving.

Time wanders through your lines and thoughts,
kissing the arcane beauty of your face;
but in you it does not fade,
there is no suffering,
and in the infinite resounds your name:
Sandra.

My love, gather the fallen apples,
and set aside one from your basket for me;
I need the breathless suffocation, the lost gazes,
the terrible unconsciousness I felt that night—
for my days die far away,
breathless,
lifeless,
dreamless,
without you.

Lágrima - Tear

(Estero Villamar actual Calle Loja y Rocafuerte, se puede apreciar el puente que conectaba la ciudad vieja con la nueva en la calle Panamá y al fondo el Islote Rojo en el Río Guayas, pintura de Ernest Charton - Villamar estuary Calle Loja and Rocafuerte, you can see the bridge that connected the old city with the new one on Panama Street and in the background the Red Islet on the Guayas River, painting by Ernest Charton, Guayaquil 1849)

The same house painted by Ernest Charton in 1849 on Loja Street between Panama and Orilla Street, Guayaquil 1863)

(Actualmente se construye la estación de la Metrovía en ese lugar - The Metrovía station is currently being built there, Guayaquil 2019)

Si después que la ignorancia parta
hacia los abismos del olvido
y nuestros cuerpos vean lo prohibido
como un juguete que divierte
al alma...

amanezca el corazón entre las sábanas
contrastadas como la noche en la ilusión
y despierta te encuentre y con amor
una sonrisa en tus labios dibujada...

se tornaría el silencio de color silvestre
el mar salvaje calmaría su furia
las más grandes melodías serían tuyas
y todos los trinos callarían si quieres;
el viento atroz cesaría su estrépito
y más allá de profecías y teorías
por dos segundos el mundo pararía
para dejar a mi voz gritar: "te quiero".

Mas, si de tus ojos la caoba
se opacara en ese eterno momento
y brotara del fondo del sentimiento
con angustia una lágrima sola...

y si descubriera en ella amor,
en ella, de la ternura, el aroma;
te juro que por esa lágrima sola,
por esa sola lágrima: moriría yo.

If, once ignorance departs
into the abyss of oblivion,
and our bodies behold the forbidden
as a toy that delights the soul...

the heart would awaken between the sheets,
contrasted like night within illusion,
and waking I would find you, with love,
a smile drawn upon your lips...

silence would turn into wild color,
the savage sea would calm its fury,
the greatest melodies would be yours,
and all the trills would hush if you wished;
the atrocious wind would cease its clamor,
and beyond prophecies and theories,
for two seconds the world would halt,
to let my voice cry: “I love you.”

But if the mahogany of your eyes
should dim in that eternal moment,
and from the depths of feeling
should spring forth a single anguished tear...

and if within it I discovered love,
within it, the fragrance of tenderness—
I swear to you, for that single tear,
for that lone tear: I would die.
