Acróstico 2003 - Acrostic 2003

(Avenida Olmedo y Eloy Alfaro, Guayaquil 1909)

Me escuchas y tus labios temblorosos
Alivian sus deseos en mis frases,
Respiras tus temores silenciosos,
Incendias tu ansiedad, después renaces.
En el teléfono mi voz te nombra,
La noche inmensa en tu pasión destrozas,
Apuras tus suspiros en la sombra

Al mismo tiempo que excitada gozas.
No toco con mis manos tus mejillas:
Desato con palabras tu vestido,
Recuerdas soledad en pesadillas,
Encuentras el amor en ti escondido.
Aquí yo te desnudo en la distancia,

Recorro con mi mente tu hermosura
O me imagino dulce tu fragancia
Mas, lejos, se deshace tu figura.
En cada piel nos falta la mirada
Rogando del amor un poco más;
Ondulas tu canción enamorada,

Conquisto lo que en ti no encontrarás...
Allá tú esperas que salvaje pida
Reposes a tus manos en tus senos;
Besa mi boca y bríndame la vida
O mátame muy lento en tus venenos.

You listen, and your trembling lips
release their desires into my phrases;
you breathe your silent fears,
ignite your anxiety, then are reborn.
Upon the phone my voice calls your name,
the immense night shattered by your passion,
you hasten your sighs into the shadow.

At once, aroused, you delight;
I do not touch your cheeks with my hands—
I loosen your dress with words,
you recall loneliness in nightmares,
you discover the hidden love within.
Here I undress you from afar,

I wander your beauty with my mind,
or imagine your fragrance sweet;
yet distant, your figure dissolves.
In every skin we lack the gaze,
pleading for a little more of love;
you ripple your song in devotion,

I conquer what within you is unfound...
There you await my wild request,
your hands resting upon your breasts;
kiss my mouth and grant me life,
or kill me slowly with your poisons.

El Tiempo Aquel - That Time

(Templo de San Francisco y Plaza Rocafuerte, Guayaquil 1910)

Si tú jamás me hubieras dado amor
hoy yo sería un hombre sin destino
de las palabras fuera yo el rumor,
fuera vacío o piedra en el camino.

Mis ojos seguirían esquivando
el firmamento cada amanecer,
mis labios estarían recitando
tus besos que jamás pudieron ser

y sin embargo, alegre te acercaste...
huí de ti temblando avergonzado,
mis manos rudas en tu piel posaste,
pintaste un corazón enamorado.

Lloré en silencio por romper el cruento
acontecer de mis funestos días,
mas no por pena... sollocé contento
por disfrutar la paz que transmitías.

Ha sido tanto que viniste a darme
y has desterrado todo mi dolor
que así yo escribo para no olvidarme
del tiempo aquel que no tenía amor.

If you had never given me love,
(Pintura del artista español
Vicente Romero Redondo)
today I would be a man without destiny,
a mere echo of words,
an emptiness, a stone upon the road.

My eyes would still avoid
the heavens at each dawn,
my lips would be reciting
the kisses that could never be.

And yet, joyfully you came near...
I fled from you, trembling, ashamed;
my rough hands rested on your skin,
you painted a heart in love.

I wept in silence to break the cruel
course of my dark and fateful days,
yet not from sorrow—I sobbed with joy,
to savor the peace you gave to me.

So much you came to offer,
banishing all my pain,
and thus I write, so I may not forget
that time when I had no love.

Vivía - I Lived

Vicente Romero Redondo)

I lived, day after day,
listening to the morning birdsong,
breath slipping upon the windowpane,
without a sense of time—I lived.

I found my calm whenever I wrote
of some distant, fading nostalgia,
until the freshest joy appeared,
hidden captive within your breast,

and set music to my loving heart,
lifting the shutters, letting warmth in,
and my sorrow in your eyes dissolved.

You decipher the doubts of my life
when you lie asleep within my pages,
and thus, day after day, I live.

la eternidad contigo he decidido

intentar regresar sin condición
ni mentiras que hubiesen confundido
a ti, mi gran tesoro, corazón...

(Pintura del artista español
Vicente Romero Redondo)

I only lived within your arms,
adoring life, in love;
do not escape my desolate world,
lady in white, you dwell in me.

Return to the landscapes I have built,
awaken in my passionate dream;
each time you leave me by your side,
I hallucinate in the kisses I gave.

Return, for I am repentant,
or hear from my lips forgiveness—
eternity with you I have chosen.

I will try to return without condition,
nor lies that might have confused,
to you, my great treasure, my heart.

The 2-lane bridge was replaced by one of 4 lanes, you can see the acoustic shell of the American Park that would work until 1965 and the bullring where the Ciudadela Ferroviaria is today with water shows in pools of lights, Guayaquil 1958)

Cuando la conocí fue su alegría
lo que más me llamaba la atención;

When I met her, it was her joy
(Pintura del artista español
Vicente Romero Redondo)
that most captured my attention;
but I saw her weeping one sad day,
and it touched and softened my heart.

I drew near to learn her sorrow,
and her girlish voice impressed me,
as if she ran across the sand
and her footprint furrowed my beach.

One night I held her in my arms,
wishing to shield her from her fears;
with tender care I kissed her,
entwining her curls within my fingers.

We spoke for hours upon the phone,
her eyes gazed at me like a giant
from some enchanting legend—
she became the only thing that mattered.

Today she lulls me in her arms like a child,
with her joy she calmed my storm,
and sometimes upon my face there slips
a single tear of happiness.

No Sé - I don't know

Vicente Romero Redondo)

I don’t know how to tell you
that your absence wounds my skin like a knife;
I cannot hold my voice in your presence—
it breaks, and I tremble like a child.

Tell me it’s not true, that you won’t leave,
that I will see your face when I wake,
and that in solitude you will turn off
the light with your hands, so we may dream.

I don’t want you to go—this is my plea—
while I beg, a tear I hold back,
melting inside like a fire
the caresses I no longer receive from you.

I have not, I no longer have—and another day
I will miss your lips in a kiss;
in the end I cannot resist your apathy,
and for that, I begin to weep.

Esa Noche Caliente - That Hot Night

That hot late winter night
led me to a bar to drink my beer,
and at the last table of that weary place
the lights mingled with your youthful beauty.

A cheerful man held you in his arms,
speaking words that made you laugh,
while I watched, desiring in secret
to live upon your mirrored lips.

To wander horizons like an eternal traveler,
(Pintura del artista español
Vicente Romero Redondo)
to caress your mountains, to sleep on your shores,
to quench with your kisses the thirst of hell,
to bind you to my body and never let you go.

I kept watching as you danced with him,
I saw you naked, alluring, aroused,
and my projected self walked where you were
until I met your darkened gaze.

But you left with him while I drank away
the clumsy sorrow of the rejected one;
I lingered, filling my glasses
with the absurd illusion of having you near.

I understood the truth, I left the bar,
and crossing the door I found you seated;
you said to me, “Darling, let’s continue the revelry,”
and we took the street into the dawn.

That hot late winter night
I discovered the hunger in your dark gaze;
I slept upon your beaches like a weary traveler,
you slept naked, alluring, aroused.

Las Torres - The Towers

On September 11, 2001, several planes in the United States were hijacked and two hit the WTC Towers in New York)

I raised a pair of towers where all would arrive,
and through their wide windows they gazed at the world;
some labored, many others dreamed,
yet all returned when the mornings shone.

Upon those giants I once longed
that the peace of peoples be no longer utopia,
for I found all races celebrating,
and I awaited the day to join with your skin.

But it was your eyes of oriental fire
that pierced into my bare arms,
which I extended to you with joyful illusion,
and you toppled my towers like fragile cards.

Now only ruins remain, and people gather,
lifting again the dreams left there;
a sad question echoes in my mind:
to still love you, or to take revenge on you.

La Cita - The Date

The Acoustic shell in the American Park, one of the attractions of this park, Guayaquil 1935)

y tu lengua, tus labios, suavemente mojó.

You watched us arrive like a statue in the square,
and I felt your mouth upon my skin,
with the same urgency of the lover who embraces
the thrilling instant when ecstasy ends.

While I took refuge in the thirst of my beloved,
filling her with kisses, caresses, and love,
(Pintura del artista español
Vicente Romero Redondo)
behind her eyes I found your gaze,
suffocating my breath with its strange heat.

I wished to look away, yet your being called me;
I looked again, and your hand rose
along your snowy leg, lifting the hem,
your tongue, your lips, softly moistened.

You spoke your name and hid a paper
upon the table of that restaurant;
you looked at me once more, and in silence departed,
leaving in my fears a disturbing doubt.

As we left, nervous, I gathered the note,
and at home I read it, astonished:
you invited me to spend a lascivious night
on the date I should visit your nest.

I came to your door that January night,
you opened smiling in your pink robe;
you took me in your arms, you whispered “I love you,”
and I loved you on the carpet without a word.

I pressed your thighs with the strength of a puma,
entwined your hair in my furious fingers,
and a lunar eclipse awoke within the mist
burying a stake in your glassy belly.

I departed at dawn through the empty street,
remembering those eyes that changed my life.
Upon the carpet your bleeding body lay
and a paper unfolded in your hand remained.

La Rama Rota - The Broken Branch

The old wooden bridge built in 1884 was replaced by a two-lane concrete one, Guayaquil 1936)

Face up, watching the drizzle fall,
upon the wet leaves I cannot move,
and the branch from which I hung is broken,
where all my lost dreams were left behind.

I saw her walking with her mother down the street,
she stirred my illusion, made my pulse falter;
her gaze invited me to follow,
and I followed, hypnotized, unseen.

I spent the morning watching her house,
pretending to wander like a passing traveler,
(Pintura del artista ruso
Vladimir Volegov)
until the afternoon I found her window—
but it was as high as a distant star.

How could her eyes once more find mine,
longing for kisses to fill my lips,
to touch that fire that froze me as I felt it?
By moonlight I dreamed that night...

I climbed a tree that pointed to her room,
a leafy branch that urged my desire,
not thinking of the height or the cold,
nor caring for the rain that fell.

I reached her balcony and stretched my hand,
but seeing her silhouette I slipped away;
the fall to the rough ground was brief,
and I heard a crack that brought no pain.

She heard my fall and came to the balcony,
and at last I saw her perfect face;
she could not find me, returned inside,
while a night cloud hid the moon.

I wished to speak, but my cry stayed in my throat,
unable to confess this love that enchants me...
Face up, watching the drizzle fall,
upon the wet leaves I cannot move.
without being able to confess this love that enchants me ...
Face up watching the garúa fall
I can't move in the wet leaves.
