Acróstico 2010 - Acrostic 2010

(Casa Consistorial siendo incinerada de forma controlada - Casa Consistorial being incinerated in a way controlled, Guayaquil Marzo 19 de 1908)

Vicente Romero Redondo)

My love, the poetry I could write
to the fairest beach or endless night,
would seek your eyes in which to dwell,
your reading lips, your voice as well.
Without you, poetry could not exist.

For me you are the morning’s light,
the sparrow’s song outside my window,
a drop of honey where pain once lay.

When you read, recall my distant prayer:
my dreams, my poetry, my love are yours.

Gracias Papá - Thanks Dad

(Mi Padre Gastón Valentìn Murillo Layana - My Father , Guayaquil Febrero 14 de 1941 - Diciembre 26 del 2008)

Gracias Papá por todos tus cariños
Amistad, compañía y tanto amor,
Si en tus brazos seguimos siendo niños.
Tomamos de tus labios tu sonrisa,
Oímos tus canciones con sabor.
No olvidarte será nuestra premisa,

Vuela libre a través de la mañana
Acaricia los sueños extraviados
La leyenda nocturna que contabas
El bolero tristón sigue sonando
Nuestros ratos felices de bohemia
Toda risa que vive en el calor
Infinito del beso que se queda
No tendrá más lugar que el corazón.

Mira alegre si vuelves con la luna,
Unir nuestras caricias en tu frente,
Romper todo silencio con tu canto,
Imagina otro mundo diferente.
Las cosas que enseñaste fueron sabias;
Los hijos que criaste te adoramos.
Oh Padre tierno cómo te extrañamos.

Las fotos que atestiguan nuestra historia
Atesora por siempre en tu memoria:
Y ya Gastón te abraza fuertemente,
Ahora Walter ríe junto a ti,
Nuestra Roxy te besa tiernamente,
Al final tu presencia sigue aquí.

Thanks, Dad, for all your tender care,
friendship, company, and endless love;
you gave them to your children since youth,
we took your smile from your lips,
we heard your songs with flavor,
not forgetting you now is our vow.

We’ll see you when you return with the moon,
to gather our caresses on your brow,
to break this silence with your song,
to imagine a world made whole again.
The things you taught were wise and true;
the children you raised adore you still—
oh, gentle Father, how we miss you.

The photos that bear witness to our story
remain treasures in your eternal memory:
Gaston already hugs you tightly,
Walter smiles beside you now,
Roxy kisses you tenderly,
and in the end you’ll be here again.

En un Día como Hoy - On a Day like Today

(Escalinatas Diego Noboa - Stairs Diego Noboa, Guayaquil 1924)

Vicente Romero Redondo)
On a day like today, tenderness was born,
the simple beauty that enchants the wild,
within the sweet tears of the purest spring
where the sun poured out its primal passion.

I love you. In you I sheltered my writing.
I love you, proud of my creative hand,
and my time flows within your patient reading,
my gaze is lost, obsessed with your face.

Twenty-five Septembers seduce you, coquettish,
and to your life I come as an old craftsman
who shatters the heavens shaping your silhouette.

And if you loved my rough human form,
I would cease to battle against the world,
and happily sleep in silence in your hand.

La Mujer de mis Sueños - The Woman of my Dreams

(Guayaquil 1885)

(Guayaquil 1903)

(Guayaquil 1935)

(Guayaquil 1959)

(Puente peatonal a la isla Santay - Pedestrian bridge to Santay Island, Guayaquil 2018)

The woman of my dreams has begun to love me,
the princess of the kingdom held within her hand;
each time she touches me, she sets me aflame,
and turns into an angel what was never human.

When she is not with me, her warmth remains,
her voice appeases me like gentle music;
her caresses enfold me, and my mouth insists
on seeking her cheek in the flight of a bird.

When she returns, the colors all come back,
a sea of dolphins sailing in her arms;
she guides my life, her lips upon mine,
joy overwhelms me, her eyes blind me.

She can no longer feign the love she bears,
though she hides it away from all the world;
I laugh and gaze at her each time she comes,
and the brave princess grows nervous.

She is everything my soul awaited,
so fragile I fear to wound her somehow;
if this tender illusion should ever end,
in my dream-world I would lose all.

When she is weary, I take her home,
a night breeze carries us along the way;
a curious cat passes between us,
and climbing the stairs, she bids me farewell.

Mientras Exista Un Día - As long as there is a Day

(Olmedo y Eloy Alfaro, 1930)

(Olmedo y Eloy Alfaro, Guayaquil 1940)

As long as there is a day to love,
your body will ignite my very being,
and through my veins I’ll feel the move
of rivers overflowing, ever-seeing.

Before you, my world was mine alone,
enough to carry on, to live each hour;
before you… it was only cold, a stone,
a portrait of a hidden tale, no power.

Your caresses shattered all my schemes,
you are the voice that seals my fate;
return to me the flame that burns in dreams,
embrace my life with kisses passionate.

Acróstico 2005 - Acrostic 2005

(Av. Olmedo y Malecón, Guayaquil 1940)

(Av.

aleteo perdido y ofuscado.
trataré de vivir sin ser amado;
rogaré que termines este horror
o me salves, princesa, con tu amor.

(Pintura del artista español
Vicente Romero Redondo)

You return each morning to draw me,
in my sky your face, sweet girl;
you steal the hours of sleep upon waking,
or your laughter condemns the night.

No, you do not think of me, you are not mine,
relentless my reason repeats;
how beyond me your sympathy lies,
to bring my heart closer to you.

Like a blind man I grope for your memory,
fluttering, lost and confused;
I know that time tells me I lose you,
I will try to live without being loved.
I will beg you to end this horror,
or save me, princess, with your love.

Amor que se Esfuma - Love that Fades

(Interior del Mercado Sur - Inside of the South Market, Guayaquil 1910)
(Exterior del Mercado Sur - Outside of South Market , Guayaquil 1910)

You look at me, flirtatious, and awaken
my senses in their deepest core,
turning within my dreams, mistaken,
my sorrows into joy once more.

Yet you vanish when I long to keep
your presence in my life sustained,
like a sigh escaping as I weep,
hoping you return, unchained.

If Maria is your name, you know—
of the Angels you are, yet not mine;
your kisses are not mine to bestow,
but rocks of melancholy I enshrine.

Then why that gaze which tempts my nights,
seducing revels with its flame?
And why did I find you, if despite,
this sorrow in your lips remains the same?

I will live in your mirage, if you will,
while as a ghost I’ll love you still;
and when a cold wound makes you cry,
you’ll mourn because I am not nearby.

La Razón - The Reason

Yo te quiero, lo sé y me he callado;

There are people who manage to rise,
with virtues and for admiration,
of those who wish and will fall in love,
(Pintura del artista español
Vicente Romero Redondo)
yet sometimes there is no reason.

There are also those who have learned
with time to understand the heart,
and at last they wholly loved—
yet sometimes there is no reason.

There are those who gaze into the depths,
where trembling souls awaken to a song;
but the restlessness I hide within
is that sometimes there is no reason.

So sometimes there is no reason
to nourish a pure and faithful love,
to harbor each day an illusion,
to ignite a destiny more obscure.

I love you—I know it, though silent;
but it is not obsession, only love,
for I was always in love with you,
even if you believe there is no reason.

In my life I have missed your gaze,
your perfume within my breath,
your true and tender caress,
and that you believe there is a reason in me.

Fuente de Ansiedad - Source of Anxiety

yo me quedo ahogando mi ternura
en la amarga fuente de ansiedad.

For time runs on imperceptibly
(Pintura del artista español
Vicente Romero Redondo)
when one loves, immersed in solitude,
and a single minute turns indestructible
within my bitter source of anxiety.

Just a month without drinking from your kisses,
and I have not been the same man;
my body and my mind remain unharmed,
yet your hand has wounded my heart.

You live your dreams upon my sorrow,
unmeasured in your ruthless acts;
I was but a tear upon your sand,
vanishing into the evaporated air.

A secret I became within your past,
forgetfulness awaits me in your future;
from your love I have only learned
to see the darkness of your aim.

You see how madly I loved you—
madness it was to love your falsehood;
I remain, drowning all my tenderness
in the bitter source of anxiety.

Acróstico 2003 - Acrostic 2003

(Avenida Olmedo y Eloy Alfaro, Guayaquil 1909)

Me escuchas y tus labios temblorosos
Alivian sus deseos en mis frases,
Respiras tus temores silenciosos,
Incendias tu ansiedad, después renaces.
En el teléfono mi voz te nombra,
La noche inmensa en tu pasión destrozas,
Apuras tus suspiros en la sombra

Al mismo tiempo que excitada gozas.
No toco con mis manos tus mejillas:
Desato con palabras tu vestido,
Recuerdas soledad en pesadillas,
Encuentras el amor en ti escondido.
Aquí yo te desnudo en la distancia,

Recorro con mi mente tu hermosura
O me imagino dulce tu fragancia
Mas, lejos, se deshace tu figura.
En cada piel nos falta la mirada
Rogando del amor un poco más;
Ondulas tu canción enamorada,

Conquisto lo que en ti no encontrarás...
Allá tú esperas que salvaje pida
Reposes a tus manos en tus senos;
Besa mi boca y bríndame la vida
O mátame muy lento en tus venenos.

You listen, and your trembling lips
release their desires into my phrases;
you breathe your silent fears,
ignite your anxiety, then are reborn.
Upon the phone my voice calls your name,
the immense night shattered by your passion,
you hasten your sighs into the shadow.

At once, aroused, you delight;
I do not touch your cheeks with my hands—
I loosen your dress with words,
you recall loneliness in nightmares,
you discover the hidden love within.
Here I undress you from afar,

I wander your beauty with my mind,
or imagine your fragrance sweet;
yet distant, your figure dissolves.
In every skin we lack the gaze,
pleading for a little more of love;
you ripple your song in devotion,

I conquer what within you is unfound...
There you await my wild request,
your hands resting upon your breasts;
kiss my mouth and grant me life,
or kill me slowly with your poisons.
