Renacer - Rebirth

(The engraving depicts the capture of Guayaquil by Woodes Rogers on April 24, 1709, and is a good example of the way in which the privateers and pirates idealized their adventures when they wrote them. The picture belongs in the book published in Amsterdam in 1717 entitled "VOYAGE AUTOUR DU MONDE COMMENCE IN 1708 FINI IN 1711 FOR LE CAPITAINE WOODES ROGERS", the edition belongs to the rich library of the Central University of Quito.)

Puede seguir el sol cegándome los ojos;

Si tú estás junto a mí no necesito nada

The sun may go on blinding my eyes;
in the desert the wind may strike my being—
but at the end you gaze with passion upon my ruins,
for even in hell I know I must love you.

Perhaps the oceans, in their many rages,
will deny me the pleasure of their fresh waters;
but I know that, seeing me die in my desires,
you will give me tenderness to drink from your tears.

And I will remain regal and bold within your gaze.
If you are beside me, I need nothing;
but if the fatal moment of your farewell arrives,

I know you will kill me, yet I will be reborn
in the cruel memory of your harmonious voice,
and in the nocturnal, cold arms of another woman.
