El Rosal - The Rosebush

(Calle Numa Pompilio Llona, Guayaquil 1910)

(Calle Numa Pompilio Llona, Guayaquil 1920)

Un rosal que era cuidado
por un viejo jardinero
una vez fue descuidado
a su suerte por entero.
A una nube que pasaba
que su sombra lo tapaba
el rosal rogaba así:
- ¡Nube buena, nube blanca
que mis pétalos arranca,
lanza lluvia sobre mi!

Mas la nube indiferente
de reojo lo miró;
se burló de su simiente,
con el viento se marchó.
- ¡Nube mala, nube negra
que a mis penas se me agrega,
no te vayas de mi lado!
Se quedó aquel rosal
esperando lo fatal,
a su suerte abandonado.

Una niña que lloraba
se acercó por el jardín
y el rosal que observaba
esa tristeza sin fin
le dijo: - ¡Niña preciosa
que pareces mariposa,
tus lágrimas deja en mí
para así secarlas yo!
Y la niña respondió
- ¡No me acercaría a ti!

Un rosal con su perfume
hace un rato me hechizó
pero algo hizo que se esfume
esa magia que mostró,
¡una espina me clavó!...
Y su dedo le mostró
con la herida aún sangrante
y el rosal le dijo así:
- ¡Niña buena de alelí
que me miras tan distante

mis pétalos curarán
aquella melancolía
y esos temores se irán
,jamás te lastimaría!...
Y la niña contestó
- ¡No te creo!... pero yo
pasaré para mirarte
porque eres majestuoso
y porque eres tan hermoso
que me encanta contemplarte...

Y la niña se acercaba
cada tarde... a mirarlo
pero no se percataba
que al tener que rechazarlo
lentamente se moría
hasta que un sombrío día
en su lugar encontró
a un arbusto pequeñito
recogido y ya marchito
que alguna ocasión la amó.

A rose bush once tended
by an old gardener
was left neglected,
abandoned to its fate.

To a passing cloud
whose shadow covered it,
the rose begged:
“Good cloud, white cloud,
that strips my petals,
send your rain upon me!”

(Pintura del artista español Vicente Romero Redondo)
But the indifferent cloud
glanced sidelong at him,
mocked his seed,
and with the wind departed.
“Cruel cloud, dark cloud,
that adds to my sorrows,
do not leave my side!”
The rose remained,
awaiting the fatal end,
abandoned to its fate.

A girl who wept
wandered through the garden,
and the rosebush saw
her endless sadness.
He said: “Lovely girl,
you look like a butterfly,
leave your tears upon me
so I may dry them!”
But the girl replied:
“I would not come near you!”

A rose bush with its perfume
once enchanted me,
but the magic vanished—
a thorn pierced me!
And she showed her finger,
still bleeding from the wound.
The rose said:
“Sweet girl of the alyssum,
who gazes at me so distant,
my petals will heal
your melancholy,
your fears will fade—
I would never harm you!”
But the girl answered:
“I do not believe you! Yet
I will come to watch you,
for you are majestic,
and so beautiful
I delight in gazing at you.”

And the girl returned
each afternoon to see him,
not noticing that in rejecting him
he slowly died,
until one somber day
she found instead
a tiny bush,
gathered and already withered,
that once had loved her.

La Mujer que Amo - The Woman I Love

(Cerro Santa Ana y Barrio de las Peñas 1893)

(Cerro Santa Ana y Barrio de las Peñas 1905)

I

La mujer a quien amo me sonríe,
su mirada cautiva y me acaricia;

a mis penas consigue ahuyentar.
Sé que me ama, no sabe que lo sé
pero algún día yo se lo diré.

II

y creyó que por mí era adorada;

y ella nerviosa no sabe qué hacer.

Desde entonces pasea frente a mí
y me mira, se sonríe y se va;
cuando no nos observa nadie aquí
se me acerca y un beso ella me da.

I

The woman I love smiles at me,
her gaze captivates and caresses;
her presence fills me with ecstasy
and awakens delight upon my lips.

I know she loves me though she is silent,
thinking I do not know her dream,
preferring to imagine in her room
that a song whispers in her ear.

My voice carries her to the sky,
like a seagull flying to my mouth,
and in my arms she finds the fleeting comfort
of her wild fantasy.
(Pintura del artista español
Vicente Romero Redondo)

When she dances with me, her waist
in my hands dissolves, restless,
like a firefly in the dark night,
like a flower born in spring.

She does not know that when I see her walk
she drives away my sorrows.
I know she loves me, she does not know I know—
but someday I will tell her.

II

The woman I love already knows,
her joy is now part of my life,
and the caress of her gentle hand is mine
when she feels helpless.

That night she thought she confessed
her secret to her indifferent pillow,
and her lips whispered her illusion
to the moon that wanders in love.

She closed her eyes in delight
as the breeze kissed her,
believing she was adored by me—
not knowing that wind was I.

And we both live in secrecy
that others long to discover;
I watch her from afar, restless,
while she nervously does not know what to do.

Since then she walks before me,
she looks, she smiles, and she goes;
when no one is watching us here,
she approaches and gives me a kiss.

El Poeta - The Poet

(Colegio Nacional Vicente Rocafuerte, Guayaquil 1920-1930)

Vicente Romero Redondo)

In the world there was no feeling
that a flower could awaken in the gaze,
but one day there arose a flame
born from the Sea of suffering.

And the ink in his blood was his torment,
and his skin was bleached by the moonlight,
and the verses in his enamored soul
drove that moment into life.

The passion that kissed his slender lips
lit the light in his pilgrim eyes
and gave his body movement.

And he gazed at the flower with such love
that he wrote a poem to that flower—
and in the world there existed feeling.

Soy Culpable - I am Guilty

(Casa Consistorial esquina Malecón y Sucre se aprecia el reloj público - Casa Consistorial corner Malecon and Sucre the public clock is appreciated, Guayaquil 1890)

Soy culpable, confieso, dañé sus ilusiones.
Se acercó cual conejita inocente,
me arrullaba entonando sus canciones,
con su paz serenaba ella mi mente.

Llegó hasta mí, talvez por accidente,
su presencia apuró mis emociones
y como loco actuando incoherente
cesar produje sus palpitaciones...

Soy culpable, fue mía y la dejé
vulnerable en la fría soledad
sabiendo que era mi felicidad.

Soy culpable y por siempre lo seré
porque he perdido a Adriana, mi amada...
que soy culpable acusa su mirada

(Pintura del artista español
Vicente Romero Redondo)

I am guilty, I confess, I shattered her illusions.
She approached like an innocent bunny,
she lulled me, singing her songs,
with her peace she calmed my mind.

She came to me, perhaps by accident,
her presence hastened my emotions,
and like a madman, incoherent,
I stirred her heart to cease its calm.

I am guilty—she was mine, and I left her
vulnerable in the cold of loneliness,
knowing she was my happiness.

I am guilty, and forever I will be,
for I have lost Adriana, my beloved—
her gaze accuses me of guilt.

Acróstico 2001 - Acrostic 2001

(Seminario park entrance, Guayaquil 1910)

Va por ahí dejando poesía
al torrente de seres deleitados
la princesa que dulce pretendía
el cielo alcanzar con sus dos manos
reía de la vida, ella reía
indiferente a sospechar en algo
aquello en mí que había provocado.

Valeria armaba versos que vivían
a través de un marino palpitar
la amaba en mi silencio cada día
o al leer sus fantasías de noche
sin saber qué podrían ocasionar:
kafires sin piedad me juzgarían
a vivir cautivado de tu nombre

(Valeria Valoska amiga poetisa peruana)

She wanders, leaving poetry
to the torrent of delighted souls,
the princess who sweetly aspired
to reach the sky with both her hands.
She laughed at life, she laughed,
indifferent to suspecting
what she had stirred in me.

Valeria wove verses that lived
through a sailor’s throbbing heart;
I loved her in silence every day,
or when reading her fantasies at night,
not knowing what they might cause—
merciless kafires would judge me
for living captivated by her name.

Orión

(Guayaquil 1910)

The story is told of a fatal time,
when music was lost in a virtual realm,
and no colors remained to paint,
while naughty elves listened to whispers.

There was a princess who let pass
a helpless cat with sorrowful eyes,
and a troubadour wept without guitar,
while Orion lay confused, reflected in the sea.

But one day the sun suddenly shone,
the colors painted love with joy;
they raised their glasses, and at last was heard
the princess, the cat, and the happy troubadour.

And their verses proclaimed, carried by the wind,
throughout the kingdom a joyful song,
while elves recounted with admiration
that Orion, blushing, offered his smile.

Acróstico 2000 - Acrostic 2000

(Alegoría de las Colonias Extranjeras en Malecón y Víctor Manuel Rendón - Allegory of Foreign Colonies in Malecón and Víctor Manuel Rendón, Guayaquil 1930)

Sol que das esperanza incandescente,
amor como torrente por mis venas,
luz que iluminas rutas en mi mente,
oro de minas, tiempo de arenas,
mar calmado de barca ya perdida
eso eres Salomé para mi vida

Sun that gives incandescent hope,
Love flowing like a torrent through my veins,
Light that illuminates the pathways of my mind,
Gold of mines, sands of time,
Calm sea of a boat already lost—
That is Salomé for my life.

Preso - Prisoner

Inaugurada en 1907 funcionó como reclusorio hasta 1950 - (The former Municipal Prison in Julián Coronel was built by Venezuelan engineer Francisco Manrique Pacanis. Opened in 1907, it worked as a prisoner until 1950, Guayaquil 1903-1905)

A veces huyo desesperado de ti
porque tus ojos me llenaron de ilusiones
casi inocente me envenenaste a mi
y a mis alcohólicas decepciones.

At times I flee in desperation from you,
for your eyes filled me with illusions;
almost innocently you poisoned me,
and fed my alcoholic disappointments.

I wander from bar to tavern,
and like cigarette smoke you fade away,
until I feel my love has ended,
and I am free... but only sometimes.

For it is enough to see your eyes,
to imagine your mouth kissing me,
to fall in love with you once more,
and remain a prisoner of your indifference.

Tu Voz - Your Voice

(Calle Boyacá, Guayaquil 1863)

Confundida entre versos a veces
como un fantasma te apareces,
acaricias mi sombra,
tu boca impávida me nombra

Confused among verses at times,
like a ghost you appear;
you caress my shadow,
your impassive mouth calls my name,
and my hands tremble, unable
to grasp the air in which you dissolve.

I wonder if you are a mirage
or an extension of myself,
if you are silence and solitude,
or an alliteration made real,
wounding my chest—
and I have no answer for who you are.

I find you in my vast insomnias,
and you pierce me with your intense brown eyes
upon my deserted skin.
The telephone awakens me:
it rings once, it rings twice...
I lift the receiver and hear your voice.

Sin que me puedas querer - Without you being able to love me

En este parque se encuentra el busto de Medardo Angel Silva - Plaza Abdón Calderón Quisquís Street between Pedro Moncayo and March 6, the Church of San Agustín had not yet been built. In this park is the bust of Medardo Angel Silva, Guayaquil 1904)

Te quiero como a nadie he querido
mas sufro tu silencio y tu descuido
y ya no sé mis lágrimas guardar
ni sé mi soledad aniquilar.

Porque en guijarros tú has convertido
las cándidas caricias que he perdido;
tu boca que solía yo besar
ahora quieta puedes conservar.

Y vas entre mil nombres ocultándote,
entre borrascas raudas extraviándote
y sin poder hacerte yo entender

que tu tristeza, mi tristeza es...
que mi esperanza, tu esperanza es...
sin yo saber si me podrás querer.

(Pintura "La Tempestad" de 1916 del artista
británico John William Waterhouse)
I love you as I have loved no one,
yet I suffer your silence and neglect;
I no longer know how to guard my tears,
nor how to annihilate my loneliness.

For you have turned to pebbles
the candid caresses I have lost;
your mouth, which I once kissed,
now you may keep still.

And you go, hiding among a thousand names,
amid swift storms that lose you,
and I cannot make you see

that your sadness is my sadness,
that your hope is my hope—
without knowing if you can love me.
