Wendy

y las vuelve dos gigantes;
trata de huir de mis ojos
y hace sueños, realidades...

En cambio yo envejezco
entre tanta inmensidad;
si no me halla su mirada
mi mente no tiene paz

Nadie detuvo mi tiempo
entre la luna y la desesperanza;
al otro lado del mundo
nuestras caricias serán ignoradas.

Dentro de todas las cosas
queda el recuerdo de algunas rosas,
una historia de amor que tú escribiste
y unas estrellas en el suelo rotas...

Y al pensar que pronto partirás
quiere sentirte más cerca mi boca
cual desahuciado que abraza la vida
en cada beso que débil te roba.

Wendy plays with my hands,
(Pintura del artista ruso Vladimir Volegov)
turning them into giants;
she tries to flee from my eyes
and turns dreams into realities.

Meanwhile I grow old
within so much immensity;
if your gaze does not find me,
my mind has no peace.

No one halted my time
between the moon and despair;
on the other side of the world
our caresses will be ignored.

Among all things
remains the memory of certain roses,
a love story that you wrote,
and broken stars upon the ground.

And when I think you will soon depart,
my mouth longs to feel you nearer—
like one condemned who clings to life
in every kiss he weakly steals from you.

encontrando a tu mano mi alma grave
nativa de universos grises... quietos.
deja que en mis sueños loco aprenda
a también adorar tu nombre... “Glenda”.

(Pintura del artista italiano
Vittorio (Vidan) Dangelico)

“Gastón”... your lips softly pronounced,
casting all my secrets into the air,
finding my solemn soul within your hand,
native of gray universes, silent and still.
Let madness learn in my dreams
to worship your name as well... “Glenda.”

Tribulación - Tribulation

(Busto de Vicente Rocafuerte en redondel del Colegio del mismo nombre - Bust of Vicente Rocafuerte in round of the College of the same name, Guayaquil 1947)

Like a girl who quietly goes
into the world of her new fears,
your eyes gazed at me with anxiety,
to fill my sky with radiance.

Playfully you approached my walls
of gloom and tribulation,
and your loving hands touched
the cruel hardness of my heart.

Your kisses sparked explosions
of red suns within my dreams,
and earthquakes upon my enslaved back,
bound to your caresses, to pain and cold.

But when time at last carries me away,
and if it happens to you as it did to me—
when far from here you feel alone—
always remember that I think of you.

Impasividad - Impasivity

(Inauguración Monumento a José Joaquín de Olmedo en avenida del mismo nombre y calle Eloy Alfaro - Inauguration Monument to José Joaquín de Olmedo in avenue of the same name and Eloy Alfaro street, Guayaquil 1892)

menos en mí;
mis sentimientos no son menos duros
que el mármol de la Rotonda.

Las rimas adolescentes se derrumbaron
aplastando este cuerpo que castigo
en el exilio de tus besos...
luego vienes tú con una palabra
entre el sueño y la realidad
que no sé pronunciar;
y aún así
me sonríes.

No sé si seré menos malo
si te amo.

You seek silence in the air—
our drop of anxiety escapes into the wind
and corrupts the eternal stillness
of three pages of your diary.

When the world turns in counter-orbit
of its melancholy indifference,
(Pintura del artista ruso Vladimir Volegov)
you and I will stand watching
the Guayas from opposite banks,
analyzing how that absurd river
dissolves in its silver flow.

Behind the eyes of your fictional character
no enchanting Andean landscapes hide,
only the chill of fear
and the other sins of the coward.

Sleep to the rhythm of my steps
and think of everything,
except of me;
my feelings are no less hard
than the marble of the Rotonda.

Adolescent rhymes collapsed,
crushing this body I punish
in the exile of your kisses...
then you arrive with a word
between dream and reality
I cannot pronounce;
and even so,
you smile at me.

I do not know if I will be less cruel
if I love you.

Póstumo - Posthumous

(Antiguo Estero Carrión, actual Av. Olmedo - Old Estero Carrión, current Av. Olmedo , Guayaquil 1887)

son los monstruos prófugos de mi realidad;

y miles de poemas me puse contento a gritar;

y con el mismo cuidado de quien siembra una flor;

para quien quise y no me supo amar;
mas, si alguien llama a esto poesía
no volveré a escribir un verso jamás.

The words in my verses are a tale of horror,
(Pintura del artista ruso
Vladimir Volegov)
fugitive monsters of my reality;
yet in the gloomy silence of an office,
I closed my eyes and painted you in my mind to dream.

I broke the mute symphony of cowardly frustrations,
and thousands of poems I shouted in joy;
but since even your ear did not endure them,
like stones, they will remain upon the shore of the Guayas.

I stroked your cheeks with fear and shame,
with the same care as one who sows a flower;
yet what lies mauve and withered at your feet
was the last vulnerable illusion of my heart.

The timid kisses born of the soul,
the starry nights my being longed for you,
the tenderness in which I was intoxicated by your gaze—
they vanished, they ended, they are gone.

For so much hatred compelled me to write this piece
for one I loved who did not know how to love;
and if someone dares to call this poetry,
I will never write another verse again.

Ruego -Supplication

(Segundo templo de La Concepción- Second Temple of  La Concepción, Guayaquil 1863)

atrevido venga a interrumpir
esta paz:
deja desiertas las montañas de mi mundo
deja secos los cauces de mis ríos
y procura nada más de mí
el conocer el amor por mis semejantes.

A ella:
agua purificante que regó mis campos
hasta hacer nacer de ellos
la esperanza como un manto vivo;
hazla feliz;

Lord:
since the essence of her being,
which once made fantasy vibrate in mine,
no longer reddens my veins,
(Pintura del artista ruso Serge Marshennikov)
and since the summer flower
has fallen irremediably
upon my vulnerable heart,
do not let another daring love
come to disturb
this peace:
leave the mountains of my world deserted,
let the courses of my rivers run dry,
and grant me nothing more
than to know love for my fellow men.

To her:
purifying water that watered my fields
until hope was born from them
like a living mantle;
but she was only a passing cloud,
and contrary winds carried her away from me.
Make her happy;
may her soul never be left
unprotected at night (for hers once touched mine),
may the burning sun never wound
her skin (for my caresses lived there).
And now that my gaze is lost
in the distance of this gloomy painting,
longing for the bark-brown color of her eyes,
I ask only
that you take me very soon with you.

Noctámbula - Noctambulist

(American Park y los baños del Salado con su puente - American Park and the Salado baths with its bridge, Guayaquil 1922)

no tienes
que mentir.

Caress all my skin until you feel
the sea’s fury upon my nakedness;
forbid my breath, and populate with kisses
(Pintura del artista ruso Serge Marshennikov)
my uninhabited worlds—
for I prefer the thunder of ecstasy
to the sublime existence of abandonment,
and the desperate cry of your hands
over the monosyllabic language of silence.

Browse the anxieties of my body
and you will find blank pages;
travel the paths of my soul
and you will not find in me
the same man you know:
ruin of forgotten ruins,
total collapse of human exegesis—
but inflamed cells that swarm
in kisses burning in living flesh.

Now lock yourself within my chest,
shape yourself within my pagan darkness,
like an empty point at the universe’s end,
projected into the dimension of my arms.
Lose yourself, spend the night in my abode,
and later look at me
between these walls—
at last,
you need not lie.

Pecocita - Little Girl with the Freckles

.
(Pintura del artista georgiano Irakli Nadar)

To hold you closer every day,
these follies surround you still,
like foam that touches and kisses you,
or a beautiful dream as you sleep.
As distant as a star,
I reach for you in vain;
such passion for you condemns me
to live forever loving you.

Estatua - Statue

(Inauguración estatua de Simón Bolívar, Parque Seminario - Inauguration statue of Simón Bolívar, Parque Seminario, Guayaquil 1889)

Tu amor jamás posó
sus alas lepidópteras
sobre mis hombros de mármol;
quizá no te llamó la atención
mi actitud estática,
mi visión fija en el infinito
de la fantasía.

Pero esa mirada ensombrecedora
te reclama con el silencio más mudo
que tus labios den sabor nocturno
a mi inconsciencia.

Desde el fondo de una alcohólica soledad
se confunden mis temores
con la esencia del cristal
y aunque juegues ahora
entre flores de atractivos colores
que luego se marchitarán
mi corazón duro se ensaña
en que al fin cansada
encuentres sosiego
en mí,
después de todo,
aquello que estaba vivo aquí
lleva tiempo sepultado

nadie pasa junto a mí
todos se han ido
menos mi tristeza
porque podría permanecer
inmóvil aquí
esperando que me toques
y un día no me encuentres
y me apague con el fuego
del último cigarrillo.

Pues cuando acabe el cuento
me habrán convertido las adversidades
en pedacitos de piedras olvidadas
en algún lugar que nadie visita
después de todo
tampoco soy eterno...

Your love never rested
its butterfly wings
upon my marble shoulders;
perhaps my static attitude
did not draw your gaze,
my vision fixed upon
the infinite of fantasy.

Yet that shadowed look
summons you with the most mute silence,
that your lips might lend nocturnal flavor
to my unconsciousness.

(Pintura del artista norteamericano
Daniel Gerhartz)
From the depths of alcoholic solitude,
my fears blur with the essence of glass;
and though you play now
among flowers of alluring colors
that soon will wither,
my hardened heart insists
that, weary at last,
you might find calm in me.

After all,
what once lived here
has long been buried,
since my ears no longer hear your voice—
distracted by the echo
of the abyss.

Now no one gazes upon my unchanging countenance,
no rumor of songs reaches me,
no one passes by—
all are gone,
save my sadness.
And I could remain
motionless here,
waiting for your touch,
until one day you do not find me,
and extinguish me
with the fire of the last cigarette.

For when the tale is ended,
adversities will have broken me
into fragments of forgotten stone,
in some place no one visits—
after all,
I am not eternal either.

Sunday dawns upon your wild skin,
your figure mapped within my mind,
with jungle scents, both fierce and innocent,
after the aurora lights you from the East.

Existence without you seems vain to me—
as if forgetting to count the stars at night;
without losing myself within your hands,
the songs of the world could fall silent forever at sea.

The elegy of a silent dream presumes
that at morning it suddenly vanishes—
the plenilunar illusion of two beings joined,
into solitary love, if they awaken on Monday.
