Dificultad - Difficulty

(Templo de Santo Domingo en la Plaza Colón luego del incendio grande, también se aprecia el hospital Militar que tampoco existe - Temple of Santo Domingo in Plaza Colón after the big fire, you can also see the Military hospital that does not exist either, Guayaquil 1896)

Difícil superar todo tu adiós
y renunciar a aquello que se siente,
salen tonos amargos de mi voz
y mi vida parece estar ausente.

Una faz de mi mundo se oscurece
pues mis ojos no alcanzan tu fulgor

Difícil pues mi mente no te olvida;

difícil pues mi mente no te olvida.

Hard to overcome all your goodbye
(Pintura del artista surcoreano J. Won Han)
and give up what it feels,
bitter tones come out of my voice
and my life seems to be absent.

A face of my world darkens
because my eyes don't reach your glow,
the emptiness of my soul grows and grows—
I'm just a handful of pain.

Difficult, for my mind does not forget you;
my heart only beats for you,
without love its death is similar
to that of a tulip that withers.

While you with my dreams drift away,
and to think I ate from your hands,
hesitating in darkness today you leave me
without enjoying your superhuman charms.

For your return I always pray to God,
for this torment has no way out;
hard to overcome all your goodbye,
hard, for my mind does not forget you.

¿Para qué insisties... - Why do you insist...?

(Panoramic view of Cuenca 1943 taken from La Chorrera Avenue)
¿Para qué insistes en un imposible
corazón? Sabes que no puedo odiar...
si puede haber quien sienta tan terrible
de entre nubes naciste para amar.

(Mirador de Turi, Cuenca 2010)
Sí, naciste corazón de entre nubes;
cada mañana hacia ellas subes, subes,
juegas con ellas, mas luego, con calma
observas cómo se envejece mi alma,
le das joyas, le cantas alguna canción
precisa para cualquier ocasión
y tomas las tardes de su cintura
o anocheces en alguna aventura.

¿Para qué insistes en una locura
corazón?; sabes, no puedo olvidar
a su amor, su sonrisa, su figura
nacida de entre rosas para amar.

Y creciste corazón entre rosas,
aprendiste caricias cariñosas
que de rojo te fueron a pintar
sin que espinas te lleguen a tocar
para que nunca estés triste, sombrío;
dilúyete en el alegre rocío
que cae de este hermoso vegetal
y por favor, no cambies para mal.

Why do you insist on an impossible
heart? You know I cannot hate...
(Pintura del artista surcoreano J. Won Han)
if there is one who feels so wretched,
from clouds you were born to love.

Yes, heart, you were born from clouds;
each morning you rise, rise,
you play among them, then calmly
watch how my soul grows old,
you give it jewels, you sing a song
perfect for any occasion,
you take the afternoons by the waist,
or vanish into some adventure at night.

Why do you insist on madness,
heart? You know I cannot forget
her love, her smile, her form,
born from among roses to love.

And you grew, heart, among roses,
you learned affectionate caresses
that painted you in red,
without thorns ever reaching to touch you,
so you would never be sad or dim.
Dissolve yourself in the merry dew
that falls from this beautiful plant—
and please, do not change for the worse.

Bajo el Arbol - Under the tree

(Parque Miraflores, Cuenca 2009)

no ha trazado una ruta que seguir;
fue cegado por tanto resplandor
y hoy tu sombra desea perseguir.

entre las fantasías de mi mente;
al llegar el invierno sigo amándote
y al volver el verano más ferviente.

There is a man beneath the tree, waiting,
lush with hope, yet solitary.
In its roots lie years of dreams—
(Pintura del artista ruso Vladimir Volegov)
he has dreamed of you for nearly a millennium.

He does not care for cold or heat,
he has not traced a path to follow;
blinded by so much radiance,
today he longs to chase your shadow.

He was once the master of kingdoms and delights,
today he carves a heart into the tree,
for too many caresses left behind
an illusion within his soul.

And the hours pass slowly,
yet no one knows that he is there;
though admired by all who wander past,
today he pours his life into you.

And how he laments! If you could see him—
the poor man imagining your slender waist;
yes, poor indeed! If tonight you came to the tree,
a single kiss of yours would drive him mad...

That is me, the one who always longs for you,
within the fantasies of my mind;
when winter comes, I still love you,
and when summer returns, more fervently still.

Caricias - Caresses

Esa vez me acariciaste,
me acariciaste en la orilla;
como fuego me besaste
en la boca y la mejilla...
esa vez me acariciaste,
me acariciaste. Dormía
(Comedores Playa Jambelí, Manta, Manabí 2012)
y en sueños sentí la brisa
de un pañuelo que caía.

Esa vez me acariciaste
y lo hiciste con pasión
tan profunda que llegaste
a tocarme el corazón...
esa vez me acariciaste
sin motivo, sin razón;
caíste como del cielo,
diste a mi vida color.

Esa vez me acariciaste
e hiciste que mi amor crezca
dependiendo de tu palma;
hiciste que todo sepa
sólo a tus suaves caricias...
te fuiste con la marea
y más no he vuelto a sentir
una caricia como esas.

That time you caressed me,
you caressed me on the shore;
(Pintura del artista ruso Konstantin Razumov)
like fire you kissed me,
on my lips and on my cheek...
that time you caressed me,
you caressed me. I slept,
and in dreams I felt the breeze
of a falling handkerchief.

That time you caressed me,
and you did it with such passion,
so deep you reached
to touch my very heart...
that time you caressed me,
without reason, without cause;
you fell as if from heaven,
and gave my life its color.

That time you caressed me,
you made my love grow,
resting in the palm of your hand;
you made all things taste
only of your gentle caresses...
you left along with the tide,
and never again have I felt
a caress like those.

Nunca sabrá mi Corazón - My heart will never know

Nunca, nunca sabré si hay una barrera
(Mirador Hotel Isla Mar, Salango, Manabí 2012)
con un sendero a la felicidad
sembrado de bocas de primavera
que den razón a nuestra soledad.

Ni sabré de secretos al oído,
de canto de aves, de ruidos de ranas;

Never, never will I know
if there is a barrier,
a path that leads to happiness
planted with springtime mouths
that might give reason to our solitude.

Nor will I know the whispered secrets,
the birdsong, the frogs’ soft chorus;
never will I know the rising sun
that shines to wake me in the morning.

I will not know if the world is a prison
where all men serve their sentences;
my heart desires only this—
that one day, gently,
you will speak its name.

Tu Amor y el Mío - Your love and mine

es por todo aquello que ayer hiciste;
llevo tus recuerdos en mi memoria;
de que algún día llegues a ser mía;

que esperan un poco de tu querer;
es tan efímero el amor que das
que un segundo sería eternidad;
es tan álgido el amor que posees
que hasta el sol se podría congelar;

This sweet love I feel is so immense
that even eclipses cannot cover it,
and if I think of you at every moment,
it is for all that you once gave.

This wild, eternal love I hold
—I wonder if I can write its story—
(Pintura de la artista canadiense Danielle Richard)

caring not if I wander or return,
I carry your memories within me.

My love is so fragile, I believe
that even a slight snub could break it,
or only the frustrated desire
that one day you might be mine.

So vast is my love, it reaches
where the stars themselves cannot go,
where my blind heart searches for you,
hoping at last to find you.

I would paint you upon a rose
with all the caresses you have missed,
but since you are not here, fair girl,
a thousand sobs leap into my chest...

But the love you feel is so small
that a gentle sigh could make it fall
from the pedestal of passing friends
who wait for a fragment of your care.

The love you give is so ephemeral
that a second would be eternity;
the love you possess is so cold
that even the sun could freeze.

The love you keep is so empty
while my universe overflows—
and so I fear you may not understand
what my love confesses in this verse.

¡Qué bien me sentía! - How good I felt!

¡Qué bien!, de maravilla me sentía
al comenzar la ofrenda luminosa
que la luna de entonces le ofrecía
a la diosa que cruel me mataría
con sólo su mirada maliciosa.

¡Qué bien!, muy dulcemente me sentía
bebiendo de sus labios el veneno;
sabía que mi vida perdería
(Bar Karaoke Marbella en Samanes 2, Guayaqul 2006)
que así mi corazón no duraría
mas yo, como si nada, era sereno.

¡Qué bien!, y cuán extraño me sentía

¿Quién tal felicidad me traería?

How good! How wondrously I felt
at the beginning of that luminous offering
the moon of then bestowed
upon the goddess who would cruelly slay me
with nothing more than her malicious gaze.

(Pintura del artista ruso Konstantin Razumov)
How good! So sweetly I felt,
drinking poison from her lips;
I knew my life would be undone,
my heart could never long endure—
yet I, as if untouched, was serene.

How good! And how strangely I felt
to hear her speak… was it a song
of sirens drawing me to her,
that even through the passing years
bewilders my senses with its charm?

How good! And as never before I felt
when her wild laughter burst forth,
like a foal untamed in flight—
yet when night arrived she grew sad,
longing to flee from me in haste.

What shall I do now the dream has ended?
Who could bring me such happiness again?
Today without her I feel abandoned,
broken like a rag, worn and cast aside,
to be lost within the depths of her soul.

No one will ever know of this,
that I was yours and you were mine!
I will break my heart with a sword,
split in two, and bid farewell, beloved…
no one will know how good I felt.

Contigo se van - With you, all things depart

Hoy vuelan las aves por el invierno,
se van por el cielo a buscar su clima;
mis esperanzas se van al infierno
si tu dulce corazón me lastima...

y se quedan tristes recuerdos de años;
contigo se mueren mis sentimientos
y sólo me dejas tus desengaños...

se van errantes, secas y sin destino;
te vas borrándome del pensamiento
para dejarme solo en el camino...

Las palabras en el silencio callan,
cual navajas que van hiriendo bocas;

y el sol se va ocultando tras el mar;
alma, se apaga la llama donde ardes
para que no puedan verme llorar...

Today the birds take flight in winter,
(Pintura del artista ruso Konstantin Razumov)
they cross the sky to seek their season;
my hopes descend into hell itself
if your sweet heart should wound me...

My time departs, the moments vanish,
and only sorrowed memories remain;
with you my feelings die away,
you leave me nothing but betrayals...

All the leaves are carried by the wind,
they wander, dry, without a destiny;
you fade, erasing me from thought,
to leave me lonely on the road...

Words fall silent within the silence,
like blades that wound the mouth in passing;
my verses find their end in oblivion,
broken as the sea breaks stone...

The days depart, they die with twilight,
the sun sinks slowly behind the sea;
my soul—the flame where once you burned—
goes out, so none may see me weep.

Un Momento a tu Lado - A moment by your side

y Vicente Piedrahita - Plate Monument to the
donors for the construction of the Malecon
2000 is located on the Malecon between
Tomás Martínez and Vicente Piedrahita,
Guayaquil 2013)

Hay miradas que queman al rozarlas,
miradas rozando otras miradas;
palabras que alegran al pronunciarlas
e incógnitas que quedan descifradas.

Hay sueños olvidados en la noche,
sueños destrozados por un reproche;

Disfrutaba vivir siempre apurado
y beberme en un momento la vida
hasta que por mí fuiste querida
y no fui más que un momento a tu lado.

There are poems that awaken passion,
poems that tell the story of love,
and poems the heart conceals
in the deepest chambers of its pain.

There are kisses that uncover affection,
(Pintura del artista ruso Konstantin Razumov)
hidden since the days of childhood,
that ignite when given wholly
to a love with a different “I love you.”

There are glances that burn in their touch,
eyes brushing against other eyes;
words that brighten as they are spoken,
and mysteries that find their answer.

There are dreams forgotten in the night,
dreams broken by a single reproach;
there are scents that make one forget,
fragrances that drift away into the sea.

There are caresses, works of art,
caresses that banish every doubt,
caresses that compel me to kiss you
beneath a soft and silver moonbeam.

There are moments—moments to love,
moments to write poetry,
moments to gaze and to kiss,
moments when I would caress you,
and moments meant to forget
the errors that died with the day.

I once delighted in living in haste,
drinking life in a single moment,
until you became beloved to me—
and I was nothing more
than a moment by your side.

Te quiero - I love you

Te quiero sólo a ti;
mil veces el sendero
recorrí desafiando a mi destino.
Busqué un amor mas vi
mi ilusión de viajero
destrozada por ese mi asesino.

Mas cuando al retirarme
como estrella bajada
del firmamento a mí, graciosa vino...
Eras tú, tú ... y al darme
esa dicha esperada
al fin pude enderezar mi camino.

Sí!, por eso te quiero
con tu blanca cintura
y tus ojos negros, querida mía.
¡Sí!, por eso me esmero
cuando de tu ternura
me refiero en toda mi poesía.

(Pintura del artista ruso Konstantin Razumov)

I love only you;
a thousand times the path
I walked defying destiny.
I sought another love, yet saw
my traveler’s dream
shattered by its assassin.

But when I turned away,
like a star descending
from the heavens, you came to me with grace...
It was you, you—and in granting me
that long-awaited joy,
at last I could set my course aright.

Yes! That is why I love you,
with your slender white waist
and your dark, beloved eyes.
Yes! That is why I strive,
for when I speak of your tenderness,
it fills the whole of my poetry.
