A Veces Necesito - Sometimes I need

(Av. 9 de Octubre entre Gral. Córdova y Pedro Carbo, Guayaquil 1970)

A veces necesito reír en tu alma oscura,
pero otras llorar sobre tu vestido de azur;

pero jamás en mi camino, nunca te pienso;

No era para ti, mas leíste mi primer verso;
de pronto, cambia de opinión y todo es adverso;

el Norte, ¡tanto brillo me deja casi ciego!;

Sometimes I need to laugh within your dark soul,
at other times to weep upon your azure dress;
(Pintura del artista norteamericano
 Daniel Gerhartz)
I am nothing without you, almost blind without your form,
and while you are in the North, I search for you in the South.

Where will you find a love more sincere than mine,
that once used lies to possess you?
Where will you seek today the deserts, where the river?
Where will you find life, where will you find death?

With every step I take, I find you everywhere—
yet never upon my path, never in my thoughts;
you are my heart, my essence, my center,
yet other hearts give life to my canvas.

It was not meant for you, yet you read my first verse;
from then on: how happy my soul felt to love you!
Suddenly, it changes its mind, and all turns adverse;
then: how happy my soul felt to lose you!

And your eyes depart, your kisses, your waist:
the North, whose brilliance leaves me nearly blind;
again I need to laugh within your dark soul,
then I seek a way to enter the game.

Ojos Negros, Ojos Tristes - Black Eyes, Sad Eyes

Ojos tristes que en las calles
de mi barrio conocí;
cuando mi amor en tu alma halles
será tarde para mí.

Ojos negros que quisiera
contemplar hasta morir;
(Malecón en Puerto López, Manabí 2010)
si un día ella no me viera
no podría más vivir.

Años cuatro ya han pasado
y otros cuatro pasarán
y yo sigo enamorado
de tus ojos... ¿qué dirán?

¡Cuán desiertos los caminos,
pero qué triste hoy me siento!
ni ojos tristes, ni ojos negros;
hoy se fueron con el viento.

Ya no hay más que resignarse
sin tus ojos: mi ilusión;
mi amor no puede acabarse
¡qué le digo al corazón!

Sad eyes I met in the streets
of my neighborhood;
(Pintura del artista norteamericano William Whitaker)
when my love you find within your soul,
it will already be too late for me.

Black eyes I would wish
to gaze upon until death;
if one day she no longer saw me,
I could not go on living.

Four years have passed,
and four more will pass,
and still I remain in love
with your eyes... what will they say?

How deserted the roads,
and how sad I feel today!
no sad eyes, no black eyes—
today they have gone with the wind.

There is nothing left but resignation,
without your eyes, my illusion;
my love cannot end—
what shall I tell my heart?

Escribir quiero tu Nombre en el Cielo - I want to write your name in the sky

(Actualmente Puerto Hondo es un Moderno Balneario muy visitado - Currently Puerto Hondo is a very visited Modern Spa, Guayaquil 2018)

(Estero Salado Vía a la Costa,
 Playa de Puerto Hondo, Guayaquil 1988)

Escribir quiero tu nombre en el cielo,
mientras lo hago, ir lento deletreándolo;
tenderme sobre la hierba, en el suelo
y ver cómo las nubes van borrándolo.

Robar de tu voz quiero una palabra
de amor para mí, una sílaba loca;
cuando suceda y quedamente se abra,
tapar quiero con mi boca tu boca.

Un firmamento quiero despejado
que escribir quiero tu nombre en el cielo;
no te escondas, sal y ven a mi lado
que confundirme quiero con tu pelo.

Robar a plena luz quiero del sol
para que sepas que he sido el ladrón;

que mientras lo hacía, iba deletreándolo;

I want to write your name in the sky,
while I do it, slowly spelling it out;
lying on the grass, upon the ground,
watching how the clouds erase it.

I want to steal a word from your voice,
a word of love for me, a wild syllable;
when it happens and softly opens,
I want to cover your mouth with mine.

I want a clear sky
to write your name across the heavens;
don’t hide—come out and stand beside me,
I want to lose myself within your hair.

I want to steal in broad daylight,
so that you know I have been the thief;
I want to flee slowly, like a snail,
so you may see I have stolen your heart...

Later I wrote your name in the sky,
slowly spelling it as I did;
I lay upon the grass, upon the ground—
and saw the clouds were erasing it.

Pesadilla - Nightmare

I

Soñar contigo. Despertar; pensar
en ti; buscar la manera de verte
me enloquece; tranquilo... a recordar...
por el parque, a las seis... ¡qué buena suerte!

Al parque los viernes... ¿o será hoy jueves?
no importa, igualmente me arriesgaré;
talvez a tu perrito a correr lleves,
entonces un hueso le llevaré...

para que no moleste, y para ti:
historias de amor, romances sin fin;
¿poesías, bombones...?, ¿flores?... ¡sí!,
aquellas rosas rojas del jardín.
(Tarabita sobre Río Pastaza, Vía Baños-Tena,
Tungurahua 2009)

II

Mi mente es un libro abierto al ayer;

sangre, gran torrente de mi ilusión;

en tu ausencia; en, en... ¡tu ausencia!... ¿qué hora es?...
¡pantalón, camisa!.... ¡el otro zapato!
¡las cinco!... ¿perfume?... sí, no, talvez;
manos llenas... al pasador, ¿cómo hato?

III

¡Al fin!... bien, ya estoy aquí bajo una sombra;
el sol golpea fuerte en mis cicatrices
y mi amor desesperado te nombra;
abrazados serenos tan felices

así como, así... como esa pareja,
esa...

y a propósito hasta un beso se dieron;

IV

Dos meses pasaron y me llamaste:
"No sabía cómo explicar - dijiste -
no me diste tiempo y te alejaste"
Sí, no entiendo cómo conmigo diste;

I

Dream of you. Wake, and think
of you; seek a way to see you—
it drives me mad. Calmly... I recall...
the park, at six—what luck!

The park on Fridays... or is it Thursday?
No matter, I will take the risk;
perhaps you’ll bring your puppy for a run,
then I’ll bring him a bone...

so he won’t disturb, and for you:
love stories, endless romances;
(Pintura del artista británico Rob Hefferan)
poems, chocolates... flowers—yes!
those red roses from the garden.

II

My mind is a book open to yesterday;
my soul with wings of happiness
escapes my chest and lets fall
my heart into anxiety—

for your embrace; for the dark solitude
of your eyes; for the sweet song
of your voice that plunges it into pure
blood, a great torrent of my dream;

for your absence; for, for... your absence! What time is it?
Pants, shirt... the other shoe!
Five o’clock! Perfume? Yes, no, perhaps;
hands full... the clasp, how do I fasten it?

III

At last! I am here beneath a shadow;
the sun strikes hard upon my scars,
and my desperate love calls your name;
embraced, serene, so happy—

just like that couple... that—oh, it’s you!
What pain! My heart, dying, laments
upon the ruins of our love...

Alone I began to think: they laughed,
my gaze remained fixed on you,
and on purpose they even kissed;
the flowers fell, and I walked away.

IV

Two months passed, and you called me:
“I didn’t know how to explain,” you said,
“you gave me no time, and walked away.”
Yes, I don’t understand how you came to me;

the flowers in my garden withered,
I became a forgotten mime,
and when soul and life abandoned me—
ha! You tell me that was your cousin.

Centavitos - Little Pennies

(Av. 9 de Octubre y Escobedo, Guayaquil 1890)

Caen, brillantes, de noche, de día;

Caen girando y llegan a tus pies;
felicidad, tesoros o talvez
mi corazón o los versos que lees...

Chocan, suenan y bailan en el suelo;
son tierra, son agua, flores, jazmines,
azucenas, claveles; son desvelo,
pesadilla, ilusión, lo que imagines...

Tienes todos; están para cumplir
de tus caprichos los más pequeñitos;
mira, mi alma sólo quiere pedir
de tu amor unos pocos centavitos.

(Pintura del artista nortemericano Steve Hanks)

They fall, bright—by night, by day;
yes, with rain, with sun, always; now
from your eyes, your mouth—poetry,
sweet love to be born with the dawn.

They fall spinning and reach your feet,
to cast into a well, that you might wish
for happiness, treasures, or perhaps
my heart, or the verses you read.

They clash, resound, and dance upon the ground;
they are earth, they are water, flowers, jasmine,
lilies, carnations; they are sleeplessness,
nightmare, illusion—whatever you imagine.

You hold them all; they are meant to fulfill
the smallest of your whims;
look, my soul only longs to ask
just a few pennies of your love.

Querida Gitana - Dear Gypsy

(Antigua Plaza de Armas actual Parque Seminario, Serenata en Obsequio de la Estudiantina Española "Fígaro" a la derecha se aprecia el Palacio Episcopal ya al centro la torre de la Iglesia San Agustín destruida en el incendio de 1902 - Former Plaza de Armas, current Seminary Park, Serenade in the Gift of the Spanish Student "Figaro" on the right you can see the Episcopal Palace and in the center the tower of the San Agustin Church destroyed in the fire of 1902, Guayaquil Agosto 4 de 1884)

En vacías calles, mi corazón
desafió a un punzante y cruel cuchillo;

quiero sentirle a mi herida cercana".
(Pintura de la artista rusa Anna Razumovskaya)

In empty streets, my heart
defied a sharp and cruel blade;
“It will be easy,” it said, “so simple—
once inside me, no more unease.”

“Dance, keep on—already you are at the gate...
What do you intend to storm in this castle?
I carry only sorrows in my pocket—
do you need anything else, sir thief?”

But you have the body of a woman,
with black veil and gypsy dance...
Tonight I will lose myself in you,

and embraced they will find us tomorrow...
Come now, for I begin to go mad—
I want to feel you close to my wound.

El Pordiosero - The Beggar

(Trabajadores en la Plaza Colón marchando hacia la Gobernación reclamado mejoras en sus remuneraciones, fueron masacrados por el Gobierno de Camilo Ponce y sus cadáveres lanzados al río Guayas por cientos y sobre quienes Joaquín Gallegos Lara en 1946 escribió la novela "Cruces sobre el Agua" - Workers in the Plaza Colón marching towards the Government claimed improvements in their salaries, they were massacred by the Government of Camilo Ponce and their bodies thrown into the Guayas River by hundreds and on whom Joaquín Gallegos Lara in 1946 wrote the novel "Crosses on Water", Guayaquil noviembre 15 de 1922)

De las desventuras más miserables,
de la actitud indiferente de la gente,
bajo el sol opaco de sus ojos:
... por amor a Dios, me dijo un pordiosero;
y me quedó mirando el infeliz;
y me quedó mirando el miserable;
nació mi vanidad y creció con ella;
y mis oídos no escucharon,
mis ojos brillantes se cegaron,
mis piernas fuertes no se acercaron
y lo dejé con la mano extendida...
¡por un sucre, por una moneda!
y a mis espaldas escuché una voz seca:
"Vaya con Dios - me dijo- vaya con Dios".
¡Perdóname Cristo!
regresaré como un pordiosero
para mendigar contigo.

Of the most miserable misadventures,
of the indifferent attitude of the people,
under the dull sun of his eyes:
“For the love of God,” a beggar told me;
“A coin, for the love of God!”

The rust of sewer caps was his skin,
the stench of garbage was his scent,
his hand was as hard as pavement,
his lips could scarcely move,
and the wretched man looked at me—
he wished I would draw near to his rags
and touch, with the cold of a coin,
the heart of his poor hope.

Of the most miserable misadventures
he went around the world, and one day
returned to remind me I was a Christian...

He had long bristles for beard and hair,
an open chest and swollen feet,
and in the depths of his transparent pupils
a tear of many years;
down his dark cheeks ran
a river of pain with each glance,
and the miserable man looked at me—
he wished I would draw near his repugnant body
and ease, with the surface of a sucre,
the pitiful soul of his sorrow.

From the indifferent attitude of the people
my vanity was born and grew with it;
it went around the world, and one day
returned to remind me I was a Christian...

But my ears did not listen,
my bright eyes were blinded,
my strong legs did not approach,
and I left him with his hand extended—
for a sucre, for a coin!
And behind my back I heard a dry voice:
“Go with God,” he told me, “Go with God.”

Forgive me, Christ!
I will return as a beggar,
to beg at your side.

Atrás en tus Ojos - Back in your eyes

Levantar la mirada esa ocasión
fue un error pues también tú me miraste;
fue irritante el dolor del corazón
al recordar que todo me quitaste.

Fue como volver atrás en tus ojos;
(Parque Olmedo, Riobamba 1996)

That day I looked up—it was a mistake,
for you too looked back at me;
my heart’s pain was tormenting,
remembering that you had taken all from me.

(Pintura de la artista francesa Nathalie Picoulet)

It was like going back in your eyes;
my blood was bursting with emotion,
my dreams were shaped by your red lips—
to win your love was my obsession.

You dissolved within my senses:
your scent was carried in the breeze,
your words quickened my heartbeat—
I gave you everything upon your smile.

Your touch disarmed me when you held my hand,
I was delirious, without doubt;
from your mouth it was futile
to escape its exquisite charm.

And you, who conquer with a single gesture,
who hold me with a single desire—
why this treasure, why do you do this,
knowing I will never taste it again?

No me Prometas Nada - Don't promise me anything

No por favor, no me prometas nada
sobre nosotros, es mucho mejor...
(Juramento a la Bandera Instituto
Leonidas García, Guayaquil 1990)
bésame y sigue en mis brazos callada;

tu dulce mirada y no te encuentre,

No, please—don’t promise me anything
about us; it is better so...
kiss me and remain silent in my arms;
do not wound my love with words.

Today, when sorrow weighs upon your soul,
(Pintura de la artista francesa Nathalie Picoulet)
as you try to know how much I love you,
ask, and the full moon will tell you
that the universe itself is small.

Tomorrow, when your sweet gaze
seeks me but does not find me,
look upon the doll that witnessed our love,
and hold it close against your breast.

When, in a month, a desert thirst arrives
and your mouth demands a kiss,
wait for me with the gate open—
I will give you a thousand upon my return.

And in a year, when your heart believes
that time has slain my love,
a song will reach my ear,
telling me that all is over...

... then our love will have died.
That is why, my girl, don’t promise me anything
about us; it is better so...
kiss me and remain silent in my arms.

¿Llorar? - To Cry?

(Guayaquil 1989)

Tu cariño pertenece a otro todo,
¡cuánta pena!... ¿pero por qué llorar?
eso no corazón, de ningún modo,
para otra ocasión será de guardar...

Mientras, viviré de tu caridad
y de tu sonrisa me harás esclavo,
mi mano extenderé con humildad
sin recibir de ti un sólo centavo...

... ¿algo pequeño que me puedas dar?,
puede ser un barquito de papel
que bohemio haya acariciado el mar
o quizá la última gota de miel

que en sueños hubieses olvidado
o talvez una estrella de la noche,
la más turbia que te haya regalado
o un cabello enredado por tu broche.

Pero llegará un día estoy seguro,
que me recuerdes en tu soledad
y notes a mi amor sincero y puro
y podré llorar de felicidad.

Your love belongs entirely to another—
(Pintura de la artista francesa Nathalie Picoulet)
how sad! But why should I cry?
No, my heart—by no means;
it will be saved for another time.

Meanwhile, I will live on your charity,
and by your smile you will make me a slave;
I will extend my hand with humility,
without receiving a single penny from you.

... something small you might give me:
perhaps a paper boat
that a bohemian once set upon the sea,
or maybe the last drop of honey

that in dreams you might have forgotten,
or perhaps a star of the night,
the murkiest one you might have bestowed,
or a strand of hair caught in your brooch.

But one day will come, I am sure,
when you remember me in your solitude,
and see my love sincere and pure—
and I will cry with happiness.
