Ruptura - Rupture

tu risa contagiosa y divertida,
los besos que me diste sin medida
cual sombras vivirán en mis ayeres.

Volví a mirarte y nunca comprendí,

Ahora vivo solo amaneceres

Volví a mirarte y nunca comprendí,

Rupture

You said to me, I’m not what you desire,
and heaven dimmed my life with sudden gray,
the world was dressed in farewells on that day,
the sunsets died in silence, lost their fire.

Now all our times of laughter and delight,
your playful smile, contagious and sincere,
the kisses that you gave without a fear,
like shadows haunt the memory of that night.

I looked at you and never understood
why you chose my heart to shatter and to tear,
the anguish blinded me, I never could

defeat the tear that fell, though I withstood.
I stayed in silence, saddened as I stood,
and heard you say: You’re not the love I would.

I told you, I’m not what you desire,
I thought that you were gone out of my life,
but seeing you recalled your last goodbye,
things will not be the way that you require.

Now I live only dawns without your care,
no one to guard me from the wound I bear,
if you would go, I’ll show you to the way,
don’t come again, I know you as you are.

I looked at you and never understood
why you chose my heart to shatter and to tear,
my world that was created just for you

was all your own because I did believe.
but then I went on, saddened as I stood,
and you heard me say: You’re not the love I would.

Un jardín de girasoles - A Garden of Sunflowers

No esperé que aquella noche

al final de una canción
entre tristes callejones
cuando entró en aquel salón
tras cerrarse los portones
pintaría sin razón
un jardín de girasoles
dentro de mi corazón.

No esperé que aquella noche
descubriera la ilusión
y llenara con colores
cada pena que dolió.
Al dormirse los faroles
su mirada me encendió
un jardín de girasoles
en la oscura habitación.

No esperé que en esa noche
que su boca me besó
que aprendimos nuestros nombres
y que el mundo nos sonrió
me dejara sin amores
porque usted jamás volvió
al jardín de girasoles
que pintara en Ecuador

Todavía por las noches
cuando escucho su canción
entre tristes callejones
vuelve a mí cada emoción
y no son pocas ocasiones
que mi mano dibujó
un jardín de girasoles
sin usted y sin color.

Vuelva a mí por una noche
para ver salir el sol
entre nubes de algodones
dormiremos sin reloj
viviremos sin temores
porque en mí siempre quedó
el jardín de girasoles
que su amor me regaló.

A Garden of Sunflowers

I did not expect that night,
at the end of a song,
among the sorrowful alleys,
when she entered that hall,
after the doors had closed,
she would paint without reason
a garden of sunflowers
within my heart.

I did not expect that night
to discover such illusion,
to fill with colors
every sorrow that had hurt.
As the lanterns fell asleep,
her gaze ignited in me
a garden of sunflowers
in the darkened room.

I did not expect that night
when her mouth kissed me,
when we learned our names,
and the world smiled at us,
she would leave me loveless,
for she never returned
to the garden of sunflowers
she had painted in Ecuador.

Still, at night,
when I hear her song,
among the sorrowful alleys
every emotion returns;
and not on few occasions
my hand has drawn again
a garden of sunflowers
without her, without color.

Return to me for one night,
to watch the sunrise,
among clouds of cotton,
we will sleep without a clock,
we will live without fears,
for within me always remained
the garden of sunflowers
her love once gave to me.

Acróstico 2020 (Solo de guitarra)

Jamás tus manos, nunca tu mirada
En mí hallaron el profundo amor
No te aferraste a mí enamorada
Ni al despertar buscaste mi calor.
Intento recordarte colombiana
Forjándote en mis versos con pasión
En una gélida ansiedad lejana
Rompiéndome feroz el corazón.

Atrápame en tu beso apasionada
Desata tempestades de color
Regresa hasta mi puerto de la nada
Invéntale armonías al dolor.
Anocheció y se apagó la ilusión
No vuelves a mis sueños colombiana
Amaneció y no escuchas mi canción.

Guitar solo

Just never did your hands, nor did your gaze,
Ever find in me a love so deep and true;
Never in love, through all those drifting days,
Nor when I woke, you sought my warmth in you.
I try to call you back, my Colombian,
Forging you in my verse with passion’s fire,
En frozen distant anxiousness again,
Rending my heart with fierce and wild desire.

Around my soul, your passioned kiss sustain,
Drive storms of color, let them now break free;
Return from nothing to my port again,
Invent new harmonies for misery.
Anight it fell, and hope has lost its glow,
No more in dreams, Colombian, you appear;
A dawn has come, my song you do not know.

Guitar, that softens all my grief and woe,
Approach her smile within your chords so fine;
Reveal her tattoo in my song’s release,
Concentrate on me your rhythm’s flow,
Invite her back to be forever mine,
A woman I will never let you cease.

Guitar, perform for this occasion’s sake...
As to her ears you softly reach and play,
Romantic, let the fretboard throb and quake,
Zigzag my gloom and sweep it far away...
Or rhyme these tunes upon her lips so true,
Never apart from my heart’s love for you.

Acróstico 2018 - Acrostic 2018

(La Planchada en las Peñas, Guayaquil 1892)
(Antigua batería de la Planchada reconstruida. Vista exterior - Old battery rebuilt of the Planchada. Exterior view , Guayaquil 1905)

Pamela llega a veces y ríe enamorada
a veces se estremece oyendo una canción.
Monita crea mundos surgiendo de la nada
enciende en mis tristezas estrellas de ilusión
la niña que engreída se peina ilusionada
a veces canta y logra tocar mi corazón.

Pamela arrives at times, laughing in love,
at times she shudders, hearing a song.
Monita creates worlds emerging from nothing,
enkindling in my sorrows stars of illusion.
Lovely girl, conceited, combs her hair in delight,
at times she sings and touches my heart.

Pamela sleeps and dreams she lives in wonder,
at times in her dreams she feels abandoned;
she wakes and greets me with cotton kisses,
unaware that in my love she shines illuminated.
Little nymph who enjoys gazing at the boardwalk,
the playful girl who scolds me like spoiled,
at times she sings and can steal my heart.

Un mundo congelado - A frozen world

(Hotel Embassy, Quito, 2018)

Desperté otra vez sin ti a mi lado
sin caricias ni besos… sin amor,
por un mundo en la nieve silenciado
evocando tu cuerpo en un rumor.

Pero sé que yo sigo enamorado
porque cierro mis ojos sin temor
de vivir en el hielo encadenado
a los pétalos blancos de tu flor.

Dormiré a tu sombra abandonado
en el sueño de un mundo congelado
esperando que vuelva tu calor.

Dormiré otra vez sin ti a mi lado
persiguiendo tu rostro hipnotizado
entre sábanas frías… sin amor.

I woke once more without you by my side,
without caresses, kisses—without love,
in a silent, icy world I dwell,
evoking your body without shame.

Yet still I remain in love,
and when I close my eyes in fear,
I recognize your fading face
in memories heavy with resentment.

I will sleep with your shadow, abandoned,
in the dream of a frozen world,
awaiting the return of your warmth.

I will sleep again without you by my side,
without gazing, entranced, into your eyes,
between cold sheets, alone—without love.

Perfecta - Perfect

(Grabado de Guayaquil del siglo XVII, Calle Sargento Buitrón - Engraving of Guayaquil from the 17th century, Sargento Buitrón Street )

(Vista del Hotel Farallón Dillón desde la playa - View of the Farallón
Dillón Hotel from the beach,
Ballenita, Santa Elena 2016)

Perfecta como el ave que volando
se mueve impune por mis tempestades;

Perfect as the bird in flight,
moving unharmed through all my storms;
immense as the sea, destroying
the clumsy vessel of my vanities.

Where do you come from, fresh spring?
Why did your arrival to my fields delay?
I feared you would never appear,
or that my harbor would not hold you.

Perhaps I failed by not awaiting,
perhaps you waited and I came too late…
But you arrived, stirring up the wind,
and made my fevered body throb.

Now you are here, gathering desire,
thinking of beautiful things all day,
to drink coffee in the mornings,
alone on a balcony by the bay.

Immense as the sea at rest,
gazing at the horizon I behold you;
perfect as the Phoenix in its flight,
you draw paradise closer to me.

Girasoles - Sunflowers

(Instalaciones de la Cervecería Nacional, Guayaquil 1887)

(Instalaciones de la Cervecería Nacional, Guayaquil 1890)

(Instalaciones de la Cervecería Nacional, Guayaquil 1950)

(Instalaciones de la Cervecería Nacional - Installations of the Cervecería Nacional, Guayaquil 1960)

(Antiguos edificios de la Cervecería Nacional, actual Plaza Pilsener edificio Astillero y edificio Barlovento - Old buildings of the Cervecería Nacional, current Plaza Pilsener, Astillero building and Barlovento building, Guayaquil 2019)
la alegría gobierna mi loca existencia;

Girasoles me miran esperando respuesta

From the fresh dawns to the serene nights,
joy governs my restless existence;
meeting you suddenly, for only a few days,
brought the brightness of your precious presence.

But if you think I seek to ease my sorrows
in your fragile patience, like a desperate soul,
better pass me by—my seas are calm,
and other flowers replace those that withered.

If you plan to take my kisses for a few days,
just to know if my mouth pleases you,
better pass me by—I am not one of those,
nor am I a toy, nor a trophy of nothing.

And if you intend to try my caresses for a while,
better pass me by—my ship does not wait;
love cannot be forced if we do not feel it,
life cannot be lived chasing a vain chimera.

And if you think that when you leave I’ll be destroyed,
and for that you linger like a fleeting star,
go calmly, for I have already learned
to forget my ghosts and leave them in peace.

Sunflowers turn their silhouettes toward the sun
while you pass me by, pretending to test me;
your eyes do not meet mine, nor your hands hold
the passion you once decided to give me.

Sunflowers gaze at me, awaiting reply,
while I impassively watch you passing;
alone you cross the yellow forest,
embracing a silence disturbingly defiant.

But if you want it all, including my sorrows,
my festive madness, my profound pain:
from the fresh auroras to the serene nights,
my kisses, my joy, and my love will be yours.

Por si... - In case...

(Puente sobre la Avenida de las Américas a la altura de la Universidad Laica Vicente Rocafuerte que colapsó debido al terremoto - Bridge over the Avenue of the Americas at the height of the Vicente Rocafuerte Lay University that collapsed due to the earthquake, Guayaquil Abril 16 del 2016)

y arrastraran despojos, construcciones y lodo…

In case the earth should tremble, or valleys flood,
in case the moon should die, or stars depart,
or chaos should take hold of fear in the streets,
or a tornado, passing, should scar the land…

In case all things were hurled into the sky,
in case a lightning bolt destroyed it all,
or rivers swelled with thawing ice and snow,
dragging away debris, constructions, and mud…

In case the sun went dark and light ceased to exist,
despite catastrophes I would still tell you:
there is nothing, no one, that could move me
from the place where now I write to you:

the tenderest songs the world could ever hear,
the most beautiful poems I could invent,
where always your hand, without hesitation, sought me,
and at the end, with certainty, would find me.

Y montañas serán mis pensamientos... - And mountains shell be my thoughts...

(Cerro de las Cabras de Durán vista al norte desde Malecón y Olmedo - Cerro de las Cabras of Durán seen north from Malecón and Olmedo, Guayaquil 1946)

Al final no fui yo quien persiguiera
tu espectro correcto neciamente,
yo camino callado donde quiera
escuchando la música en mi mente.

Siempre supe que nunca entenderías
la insolente conducta de un mortal.
Yo camino donde tú nunca lo harías
pues lo encuentra tu lógica anormal.

No podrás quebrantar mis esperanzas
sumergiéndote infame en tus tormentos
porque aspiras tener lo que no alcanzas
(Volcán Chimborazo 2013)
pues montañas serán mis pensamientos.

Aunque tengas razón en tu universo
o tus gritos me estorben mejorar,
aunque todo en la vida sea adverso
frente a ti me verás perseverar…

tus envidias jamás me tocarán

In the end, it was not I who chased
your rigid specter foolishly;
I walk in silence wherever I wish,
listening to the music in my mind.

I always knew you would never understand
the insolent conduct of a mortal.
I walk where you would never dare,
for your logic deems it abnormal.

You cannot shatter my hopes,
immersing yourself in infamous torments;
you aspire to grasp what you cannot reach—
for mountains shall be my thoughts.

Even if you are right in your universe,
or your screams obstruct my growth,
though all of life may turn adverse,
before you, I will persevere.

Your envies will never touch me,
nor will you bind my feelings.
My desires shall be condors soaring,
and mountains shall be my thoughts.

Your malice will scatter like dust;
I will erase your moments from my story.
Behind me, the sun will always rise,
and mountains shall be my thoughts.

I do not expect you to change your ways;
none corrects who is forged a coward,
hiding within a sea of ineptitude,
burning forever in their own hells.

You will see me from below, a giant,
whose steps shake the ground of your foundations;
I will be the terror within your fears—
for mountains shall be my thoughts!

Mis silencios - My silences

(Malecón y P. Icaza, Guayaquil 1930)
Llego a ti y mis silencios te disgustan
y te altera mi impávida mirada
en mi boca, cautivas, no se ajustan
las palabras que mueren en la nada.

Y comienzo a buscar alrededor

I come to you, and my silences displease you,
my impassive gaze unsettles your calm;
upon my lips, captive, they cannot form—
the words that vanish into nothingness.

I begin to search around me
for sounds that might delight you,
only to encounter that flower,
so precious, yet unwilling to speak.

You draw its petals close to you,
then flood your body with its fragrance;
blushing, you smile before me,
and mute the very fields of language.

Night approaches, star‑adorned,
in silence it decorates infinity;
and the waning moon governs, emaciated,
the hushed penumbra in which I dwell.

Little by little, surrendering to rest,
your lifeless eyelids grow weary;
without words I caress you, and then
contemplate you in silence, asleep.

The stillness of your being reshapes me
into a sea of fantastic legends…
I gaze upon you quietly, with tenderness,
my silences speak to you without your knowing.

Yet I wish to fade within your peace,
to find the words you ask of me;
for I fear you may never wish to see me,
and in silence, at last, you will forget me.

Arrogante Amor - Arrogant Love

(Colegio Vicente Rocafuerte en su antigua ubicación en Pedro Carbo entre Aguirre y Clemente Ballén, flecha indica dónde comenzó el incendio - Vicente Rocafuerte College in its former location in Pedro Carbo between Aguirre and Clemente Ballén, arrow indicates where the fire began, , Guayaquil Marzo 8 de 1918)

Arrogante amor:

Ese día apareciste
y tus ojos en los míos
consiguieron despertar
algo en mí tan escondido
algo sin ningún sentido
que supiste aprovechar.

Desde entonces conseguiste
conocer mis inquietudes
sin siquiera conversar
que tu aliento me desnude
y robarme el primer beso
sin tus labios acercar.

Desde entonces conseguiste
visitarme por las noches
y mis sueños conquistar
secuestrar mis ilusiones
habitar en mis canciones
y mi pulso acelerar.

¡Qué arrogante amor el tuyo
que jamás quiso anidar
en mis brazos porque a ti
sólo te gustó volar!

¡Qué arrogante amor el tuyo
que dejó el tiempo pasar
no fue mío tu cariño
mas no te pude olvidar!

Otro día apareciste
y tus ojos en los míos
consiguieron recordar
que jamás hubo persona
más atenta y cariñosa
que esta que te supo amar

y en mis brazos tú quisiste
refugiarte como un día
yo te quise cobijar
pero mi alma está desierta
y estos ojos que te vieron
ya no te quieren mirar

¡Qué arrogante amor el tuyo
que dejó el tiempo pasar
ya no es tuyo mi cariño
y me tienes que olvidar!

That day you appeared,
and your eyes upon mine
managed to awaken
something hidden deep inside,
something without meaning,
yet you knew how to claim it.

Since then you succeeded
in knowing my unrest
without a single word,
your breath undressing me,
stealing the first kiss
without your lips approaching.

Since then you managed
to visit me at night,
to conquer all my dreams,
to kidnap my illusions,
to dwell within my songs,
to quicken all my pulse.

What arrogant love of yours,
that never wished to nest
within my arms, for you
only delighted in flight!

What arrogant love of yours,
that let the time slip by;
your love was never mine,
yet I could not forget you.

Another day you appeared,
and your eyes upon mine
reminded me again
there was never a person
more attentive, more tender,
than the one who knew to love you.

And in my arms you sought
refuge, as once I longed
to shelter you with care;
but my soul now lies barren,
and these eyes that once saw you
no longer wish to see.

What arrogant love of yours,
that let the time slip by;
my love is not yours now,
and you must forget me.

Luna Triste - Sad Moon

(Accidente aviatorio de El Diablo Rojo, Incendio y restos del avión en Clemente Ballén y Chile - Aviation accident of El Diablo Rojo, Fire and aircraft wreckage in Clemente Ballén and Chile , Guayaquil Mayo 8 de 1939)

Llegó el atardecer que silencioso
revive mi aflicción como un gigante
cuyo espectro aproxima el impetuoso
cabalgar de una lágrima asfixiante.

Nadie me quiere hoy y a nadie quiero

The evening came, so silent in its breath,
reviving my affliction like a giant,
whose specter neared, impetuous in its tread,
the gallop of a suffocating tear.

No one loves me today, nor do I love;
each attempt at affection proved disastrous.
I long to sail away upon a ship,
to sink at night, consumed by hurried fate.

I wish to be taken to some place
where a sad moon no longer casts its light,
where bitterness no longer comes to call
upon this life that emanates uncertainty.

How sad to love without being loved in turn;
I wish one day that I might be forgotten,
in some shadowed, secluded, distant place
where light itself would never dare intrude.

Then to leap outward through the window frame,
so none may ever know of me again;
and feeling death approach so close at last,
accept that I had never known your name.

The specter takes possession of the air,
tormenting me without the final blow;
my tear spreads westward, scattering away,
never to be recalled or missed again.

Night fell, and the sad moon wandered alone,
hiding itself behind the tangled branches,
until at last it vanished in the clouds,
like a dreadful memory among the flames.

Tu Boca - Your Mouth

It is not known exactly who its author was. However, there are references that it was founded in the Val Dosme workshops, in France, around 1882. The roundabout has an octagonal plate, is located next to the park and topped by a wrought iron ornamentation, which tops the central dome of red color. Its structure is made entirely of wrought iron, as well as its cover,  Guayaquil 1916)

con esa indiferencia que me hiere;

Your mouth that moves with dangerous grace,
that bites desire from your lips,
that clouds my reason and what I see,
and steals the colors from the rose…

Your mouth that draws near, trembling,
that makes me renounce what I believe,
that fashions a believer from an atheist,
that sings, that drinks, that kisses deliciously…

Your mouth that appears whenever it pleases,
with that indifference that wounds me;
your mouth: more than a kiss, it provokes me…

And since it takes all things as play,
when cornered at last by my fire,
it flees, without hesitation, from me: your mouth.

Majestad - Majesty

(Triumphal arch in homage to Cristobal Colon with which the Italian colony received the fourth centenary of the discovery of America. It was located on the 9 de Octubre avenue, Guayaquil Octubre 12 de 1892)
¿Qué lugar?, ¿Qué lugar me toca a mí
en tu lista de frívolos juguetes?
¿Soy la pena aburrida que volví
a encontrar en el mundo que sometes?

(Montañita, Santa Elena 2019)
Soy un día asignado en la semana
o el momento de un número al azar;

What place? What place is mine to claim
upon your list of frivolous toys?
Am I the weary sorrow that returned
to be found in the world you subdue?

(Montañita, Santa Elena, 2019)
I am a day assigned within the week,
or the moment of a random number;
I am the light that touches you at dawn,
and cold in the night you cast aside.

I am the fruit you pluck from the branch,
then leave to rot according to your will,
and the troubadour jester who sadly sings
the song that has wearied your majesty.

But… what would happen if I were gone,
if I escaped the world without a word,
if I seized destiny by assault
and discovered a way to elude you?

But… how to escape from your chains,
if when I seek freedom you deny me,
if your yoke buries me in the sands,
and your kisses trap me behind the bars?

Do not forget that I am, when you do not play,
the love your pride refuses to discern,
the reason that appeases you when blind,
and the flame that in silence is extinguished.

Indiferencia - Indifference

¿Ahora me ves indiferente?
¿Se acabó la ilusión que desvelaba
esas noches que loca e impaciente
en tus sueños tu boca me buscaba?

Qué noción tan fugaz de amor manejas
que un momento te llenas de emoción
y al siguiente colérica me dejas
y te vas a llorar en un rincón.

¿Y pretendes que crea que sufriste
en tu espera de todos estos años?
Si al final del escándalo que hiciste
nos tratamos tan sólo como extraños...

¿Dónde está la infinita admiración
que despiertan en ti mis tristes versos
o fue parte importante en la ficción
visceral de tus juegos más perversos?

Sigue igual alejando a los que quieres,
no te olvides fingirte enamorada,
pues, si finges amar... no desesperes,

What! Do you see me indifferent now?
Has the illusion ended that once kept you awake,
those nights when, crazy and impatient,
your mouth sought me within your dreams?

What a fleeting notion of love you wield—
one moment you are filled with emotion,
the next, in anger, you abandon me,
and go to weep alone in a corner.

And you expect me to believe you suffered
through your waiting all these years?
If at the end of the scandal you created
we treat each other only as strangers…

Where is the infinite admiration
that my sorrowful verses awakened in you,
or was it only part of the fiction,
the visceral play of your most perverse games?

Continue the same, pushing away those you love,
do not forget to feign being enamored;
for if you pretend to love, do not despair—
in the end, you will be left with nothing.

Delirio Artístico - Artistic Delirium

(Paseo de las Colonias, actual Malecón 2000, Guayaquil 1935)
"Vita brevis, ars longa, occasio praeceps, experimentum periculosum, iudicium difficile" (Hipócrates)

Tan triste por tu ausencia comencé
a rebuscar mis carboncillos viejos,
mis acuarelas secas encontré
y el lienzo que pedía mis bosquejos.

Mi mano cual posesa descarriada
tu rostro se empeñaba en dibujar
tu orgullo, tu sonrisa y tu mirada

y estuve silencioso por un rato;
entonces loco me corté las venas
y derramé mi sangre en tu retrato.

So sad in your absence I began
to search for my old charcoals,
my dry watercolors I found,
and the canvas that begged for my sketches.

My hand, possessed and astray,
was determined to draw your face—
your pride, your smile, your gaze,
vanishing deep beneath the sea.

From my palette all colors leapt
toward your image upon the canvas.
I painted as if I were a thousand painters,
painting in the flicker of a trembling candle.

The forgotten verses of a poet
gave light to the brilliance of your eyes,
yet I had not, in my immortal palette,
a color to paint your lips red.

Seeing you incomplete increased my sorrow,
and I remained in silence for a while;
then, mad, I cut my veins
and spilled my blood upon your portrait.

Inquebrantable - Unbreakable

Llegaste y no te vi, me hablaste y no escuché;
mi mente se encontraba distante e inalcanzable…
Te oí mas me callé, te vi mas te ignoré;
aquella tarde fui un roble inquebrantable.

Te fuiste con tu luz… ¿a dónde?, no lo sé;
quizás serás feliz con alguien más amable
tú vivirás mejor yo aquí me quedaré

You arrived, yet I did not see; you spoke, yet I did not hear.
My mind was distant, unreachable, lost in its sphere.
I heard you, yet I kept silent; I saw you, yet I ignored.
That afternoon I stood, an unbreakable oak.

You left with your light… where? I do not know.
Perhaps you’ll be happy with someone more kind.
You will live better; I will remain here,
with no friend but my detestable pride.

And yet your faint glow still touches
my pale memory of having felt love,
and the exquisite kiss I stole from your mouth.

And yet your warmth still burns me,
and in that radiance my pride suffocates,
and the firm oak trembles like a flower.
