Luna Triste - Sad Moon

(Accidente aviatorio de El Diablo Rojo, Incendio y restos del avión en Clemente Ballén y Chile - Aviation accident of El Diablo Rojo, Fire and aircraft wreckage in Clemente Ballén and Chile , Guayaquil Mayo 8 de 1939)

Llegó el atardecer que silencioso
revive mi aflicción como un gigante
cuyo espectro aproxima el impetuoso
cabalgar de una lágrima asfixiante.

Nadie me quiere hoy y a nadie quiero

The evening came, so silent in its breath,
reviving my affliction like a giant,
whose specter neared, impetuous in its tread,
the gallop of a suffocating tear.

No one loves me today, nor do I love;
each attempt at affection proved disastrous.
I long to sail away upon a ship,
to sink at night, consumed by hurried fate.

I wish to be taken to some place
where a sad moon no longer casts its light,
where bitterness no longer comes to call
upon this life that emanates uncertainty.

How sad to love without being loved in turn;
I wish one day that I might be forgotten,
in some shadowed, secluded, distant place
where light itself would never dare intrude.

Then to leap outward through the window frame,
so none may ever know of me again;
and feeling death approach so close at last,
accept that I had never known your name.

The specter takes possession of the air,
tormenting me without the final blow;
my tear spreads westward, scattering away,
never to be recalled or missed again.

Night fell, and the sad moon wandered alone,
hiding itself behind the tangled branches,
until at last it vanished in the clouds,
like a dreadful memory among the flames.

Tu Boca - Your Mouth

It is not known exactly who its author was. However, there are references that it was founded in the Val Dosme workshops, in France, around 1882. The roundabout has an octagonal plate, is located next to the park and topped by a wrought iron ornamentation, which tops the central dome of red color. Its structure is made entirely of wrought iron, as well as its cover,  Guayaquil 1916)

con esa indiferencia que me hiere;

Your mouth that moves with dangerous grace,
that bites desire from your lips,
that clouds my reason and what I see,
and steals the colors from the rose…

Your mouth that draws near, trembling,
that makes me renounce what I believe,
that fashions a believer from an atheist,
that sings, that drinks, that kisses deliciously…

Your mouth that appears whenever it pleases,
with that indifference that wounds me;
your mouth: more than a kiss, it provokes me…

And since it takes all things as play,
when cornered at last by my fire,
it flees, without hesitation, from me: your mouth.

Majestad - Majesty

(Triumphal arch in homage to Cristobal Colon with which the Italian colony received the fourth centenary of the discovery of America. It was located on the 9 de Octubre avenue, Guayaquil Octubre 12 de 1892)
¿Qué lugar?, ¿Qué lugar me toca a mí
en tu lista de frívolos juguetes?
¿Soy la pena aburrida que volví
a encontrar en el mundo que sometes?

(Montañita, Santa Elena 2019)
Soy un día asignado en la semana
o el momento de un número al azar;

What place? What place is mine to claim
upon your list of frivolous toys?
Am I the weary sorrow that returned
to be found in the world you subdue?

(Montañita, Santa Elena, 2019)
I am a day assigned within the week,
or the moment of a random number;
I am the light that touches you at dawn,
and cold in the night you cast aside.

I am the fruit you pluck from the branch,
then leave to rot according to your will,
and the troubadour jester who sadly sings
the song that has wearied your majesty.

But… what would happen if I were gone,
if I escaped the world without a word,
if I seized destiny by assault
and discovered a way to elude you?

But… how to escape from your chains,
if when I seek freedom you deny me,
if your yoke buries me in the sands,
and your kisses trap me behind the bars?

Do not forget that I am, when you do not play,
the love your pride refuses to discern,
the reason that appeases you when blind,
and the flame that in silence is extinguished.

Indiferencia - Indifference

¿Ahora me ves indiferente?
¿Se acabó la ilusión que desvelaba
esas noches que loca e impaciente
en tus sueños tu boca me buscaba?

Qué noción tan fugaz de amor manejas
que un momento te llenas de emoción
y al siguiente colérica me dejas
y te vas a llorar en un rincón.

¿Y pretendes que crea que sufriste
en tu espera de todos estos años?
Si al final del escándalo que hiciste
nos tratamos tan sólo como extraños...

¿Dónde está la infinita admiración
que despiertan en ti mis tristes versos
o fue parte importante en la ficción
visceral de tus juegos más perversos?

Sigue igual alejando a los que quieres,
no te olvides fingirte enamorada,
pues, si finges amar... no desesperes,

What! Do you see me indifferent now?
Has the illusion ended that once kept you awake,
those nights when, crazy and impatient,
your mouth sought me within your dreams?

What a fleeting notion of love you wield—
one moment you are filled with emotion,
the next, in anger, you abandon me,
and go to weep alone in a corner.

And you expect me to believe you suffered
through your waiting all these years?
If at the end of the scandal you created
we treat each other only as strangers…

Where is the infinite admiration
that my sorrowful verses awakened in you,
or was it only part of the fiction,
the visceral play of your most perverse games?

Continue the same, pushing away those you love,
do not forget to feign being enamored;
for if you pretend to love, do not despair—
in the end, you will be left with nothing.

Delirio Artístico - Artistic Delirium

(Paseo de las Colonias, actual Malecón 2000, Guayaquil 1935)
"Vita brevis, ars longa, occasio praeceps, experimentum periculosum, iudicium difficile" (Hipócrates)

Tan triste por tu ausencia comencé
a rebuscar mis carboncillos viejos,
mis acuarelas secas encontré
y el lienzo que pedía mis bosquejos.

Mi mano cual posesa descarriada
tu rostro se empeñaba en dibujar
tu orgullo, tu sonrisa y tu mirada

y estuve silencioso por un rato;
entonces loco me corté las venas
y derramé mi sangre en tu retrato.

So sad in your absence I began
to search for my old charcoals,
my dry watercolors I found,
and the canvas that begged for my sketches.

My hand, possessed and astray,
was determined to draw your face—
your pride, your smile, your gaze,
vanishing deep beneath the sea.

From my palette all colors leapt
toward your image upon the canvas.
I painted as if I were a thousand painters,
painting in the flicker of a trembling candle.

The forgotten verses of a poet
gave light to the brilliance of your eyes,
yet I had not, in my immortal palette,
a color to paint your lips red.

Seeing you incomplete increased my sorrow,
and I remained in silence for a while;
then, mad, I cut my veins
and spilled my blood upon your portrait.

Inquebrantable - Unbreakable

Llegaste y no te vi, me hablaste y no escuché;
mi mente se encontraba distante e inalcanzable…
Te oí mas me callé, te vi mas te ignoré;
aquella tarde fui un roble inquebrantable.

Te fuiste con tu luz… ¿a dónde?, no lo sé;
quizás serás feliz con alguien más amable
tú vivirás mejor yo aquí me quedaré

You arrived, yet I did not see; you spoke, yet I did not hear.
My mind was distant, unreachable, lost in its sphere.
I heard you, yet I kept silent; I saw you, yet I ignored.
That afternoon I stood, an unbreakable oak.

You left with your light… where? I do not know.
Perhaps you’ll be happy with someone more kind.
You will live better; I will remain here,
with no friend but my detestable pride.

And yet your faint glow still touches
my pale memory of having felt love,
and the exquisite kiss I stole from your mouth.

And yet your warmth still burns me,
and in that radiance my pride suffocates,
and the firm oak trembles like a flower.

Cual estatua perpleja de un lugar silencioso
se congela mi voz al querer responderte,
me sumerjo fatal en mi intento infructuoso
y te esfumas entonces sin poder retenerte.

¡Sí, si, si!... Al final mi respuesta tardía
ya no puede llegar hasta ti, corazón.
Solamente me queda esperar que otro día
a mis brazos regreses como hermosa visión.

You are no longer in my arms as once long ago,
nor love upon your lips that I once kissed;
it must have dissolved, invisible in tears,
that escaped your eyes when I betrayed you.

I betrayed our dreams, our youthful love,
forgot that you were the one who loved me most.
Chasing a phantom, my childish folly
never understood I would not return to your arms.

Yet after several bitter years had passed,
I began to receive a strange visitation.
When I moor my sorrows in the sea of my verses,
you appear unceasing, an exquisite vision.

When you arrive, you ask: “Did you truly love me?
If so, why did you leave so coldly?
Do you now repent, knowing you have lost
the virgin passion of a different love?”

Like a perplexed statue in a silent place,
my voice freezes as I strive to answer;
fatally I sink in my futile attempt,
and you vanish again, beyond my grasp.

“Yes, yes, yes!”—at last my tardy reply
can no longer reach you, my heart.
All that remains is to hope another day
you return to my arms as a beautiful vision.

No Existe el Amor - Love does not exist

“I don’t know love,” she said, thoughtful.
“It must be that it does not exist,” she declared.
Whoever surrenders to compulsive emotion
claims that everything suddenly is repaired.

“Love,” she insisted, “is a tragic invention,
where the one who loves sinks in a sea of sorrow,
unable to forget that cruel affliction,
loving only those adorned with beauty’s glow.”

Her argument left me without reply.
It was not love if I could lose myself in her eyes.
It was not love, her caress—it was the wind.
It was not love if I thought she began to love me.

“And people deceive themselves,” she said in anger,
“believing love is a beautiful ending,
a poet’s dream beneath a starry night.
Love exists only in a casual dream.”

But then her attacks on the myth fell silent,
her theses surrendered to a new emotion,
as she gazed at the pen with which she had written—
unwittingly, our names inside a heart.

Un Poema - A Poem

(The city was crossed by estuaries, and bridge estuaries. This served to cross the first estuary, on Loja Street today, Guayaquil 1870)

I who once held in my hands all heaven and earth,
who forged for her an exotic gem,
I who found her fragrance on coast and mountain,
and that flower sighed when reading a poem.

I who laid indomitable storms at her feet,
who battled the sea and its supreme force,
who conquered tempests only to see her—
she remained by the river, recalling a poem.

I who each day pursued her traces,
I who wandered without country, without emblem,
I who stole from the cosmos its shining stars—
one night she slept, murmuring a poem.

When at last I awakened her attention,
and this burning love found a fragile hope,
she shattered my joy of childish emotion:
she forgot our meeting to read a poem.

I who had never read verses of love,
nor understood the theorem of rhyme or rhythm,
nor heard between lines a divine whisper,
I wrote to my beloved a simple poem.

Seeing her exalt each line she read,
I thought I had solved my tortuous woes.
Naïve was I to believe her delight—
insatiable, she made me write more poems.

While she romantically read those verses,
all of them filled with extreme adventures,
something strange occurred that splendid day…
I left her, to compose many other poems.

El Gran Hombre - The Great Man

Walter looking at the city from the Panecillo, Quito 1978)

What do you gaze at, child? The endless distance?
The people losing reason in their madness?
What doubt commands your youthful mind?
What voices cry within your heart?

If by casting a stone you could bury
in a fierce avalanche all our fears,
if by sending it into the abyss you might reach
a lasting peace with your fingers…

Would you halt time in a single instant?
Would you leave our age forever still,
in the delicate voice of an infant
that silences the tumult of the city?

What do you gaze at, child? The uncertain future?
What draws your attention with such intent?
Could it be a fleeting footprint in the desert?
Only you know, my little one.

Yet the one I behold is the hero within you,
the great man that one day you shall be.
What I see is not the child before me,
but the mark you will leave upon the world.
