mujer.

I am but ash that longs to be man,
and in the midst of uninhabited worlds,
in the full creation of passion,
on the last day, in paradise—
would you be Eve?

You could be the forge where is shaped
the sword of a brave gladiator,
(Pintura del artista ruso Serge Marshennikov)
or simply the painful nail
that crucified Christ.

You could be time itself,
grant me a truce, turn back this agony,
and leave it forgotten
in the farthest vertex of infinity.

Or simply pity this dust,
let it fade into ignorance,
not to conjugate into a tear
innocently consumed
in love.

You could be my caravel of discovery,
in which I sail utopian to your skin,
or a simple paper boat, childish, bohemian,
aspiring to reach beyond.

Treacherous, malicious idylls
that tremble in ovoid,
worldly geographies—
they are nothing but the reflection of a poem
that manages to tear from its muse...
a kiss.

You breathe through withered petals;
you could be the flower that sheds itself
one night,
or the revealing word that makes you fall
to my chest, killing me saintly
in sin.

Intoxicate my inspiration with lemon verbena and stars...
silence... silence... kiss me,
and you will see the biblical genesis dazzle,
like a newborn cradled in your lap.

Until a serpentine madness
provokes us to taste an apple...
silence... footsteps are heard in the hall,
a clock that wishes to announce
that it is not the time.

And thus the first verses are born:
“your lips are roses; your eyes, honey.”
But that has not yet happened—it will be tomorrow,
for you are but the rib
that longs to be woman.

¿Eres real? A veces tengo sueños;
a veces vienen para un poco alegrarme
el corazón ¡Eres uno de ellos
hecho realidad? Pareces inalcanzable.

A veces te miro así tan callada
pareces un cristal, me da miedo
tocarte y romperte, estatua

mientras tus ojos otra travesura calculan.

Are you real? At times I dream;
sometimes they come to cheer my heart a little.
Are you one of them made flesh?
You seem unreachable.

Sometimes I see you, so silent—
you seem like crystal. I fear
to touch you and shatter you,
a statue of Michelangelo, perhaps... but never mine.

You touch the night and the sky opens,
and that apocalypse yields to tenderness;
all the stars tumble into your hair,
while your eyes devise another mischief.

Ah, if I could be master of your destiny,
I would carry you like a poem at my side;
I would kiss you as the sea kisses the sky
upon intangible horizons, without end.

There must exist in my ancient vocabulary
another word that also means “I love you.”
Unreachable will your light remain for these verses,
left to the mercy of wolves,
in oblivion.

Within you the passionate Ecuador is tempered,
(Pintura del artista ucraniano Michael Inessa Garmash)
as in guitars deliciously resonant;
within you the stars are startled
by all the eclipsed nights.

Within you dwell the mysterious peaches of beauty,
the identical atoms of the farthest confines;
the muses clothe themselves in clay,
and kisses turn into martial law.

Within you the verb “to love” is conjugated in all tenses.
Your body is the product of desolate footprints
left behind by the sun.
Your eyes are another way of speaking silence,
and all things are summed up in your name.

I have all the time to say it,
and while apples pay tribute to your youthful womb,
or when the last firefly fades,
extinguishing its unextinguishable light upon your hair—

in every craving for wild dreams,
in every sumptuous emotion,
after praying and before sleep,
and in the last breath of my sorrows: you.

Derecho.

Yo abro a la mitad de la tarde
el último segundo inocente
y entro para curiosear
los crisólitos de Oriente
jugando a las escondidas
bajo la falda de la señora
Tierra.

Por eso vivo feliz
y sobrevivo hasta la noche
como si el atardecer fuera
la aurora
como si la muerte fuera
la vida.

Por eso camino sobre espinas sin temor,
puedo perdonar y decir amigos:
Tengo pena de ustedes
que repasan los diez mandamientos
del Reglamento.

Amigos, tengo pena
de verlos marchar como soldados
de verlos adorar a cuatro trapos
de verlos tan cómodamente enjaulados
en la verdad.

Por eso aún en medio de tanta
fantasía
gozando de oníricos encantos
y en medio de luciérnagas encantadas
me pongo a soñar.

Everything is strange,
yet everything feels so normal;
we are sitting on the same benches as yesterday,
but I look at them from the unreal.

(Pintura del artista ruso Serge Marshennikov)
If you could see the moon from here—
I feel sorrow from here;
my joys are naked,
while apples calculate
the sine of their marvelous sins,
as you repeat mechanically
your lessons in Law.

I open, in the middle of the afternoon,
the last innocent second,
and I enter to wander
among the chrysolites of the East,
playing hide and seek
beneath the skirt of Lady Earth.

That is why I live happily
and survive until night,
as if sunset were dawn,
as if death were life.

That is why I walk on thorns without fear,
I can forgive and say, friends:
I pity you,
who rehearse the ten commandments
of the Regulation.

Friends, I grieve
to see you march like soldiers,
to see you worship four rags,
to see you so comfortably caged
within your truth.

That is why, even in the midst of so much
fantasy,
delighting in dreamlike charms,
and among enchanted fireflies,
I begin to dream..

Inmediato - Immediate

(Guayaquil, 1836)

a carmín;

pared,
y en la consigna todos los compases
trazan la roja circunferencia de una manzana.

Tímidamente tus dedos recorren embelesados
el inmediato corporal de mis desvaríos;

The waters of your beaches are emptying,
and on your shores lingers the taste of carmine;
now the keys of my typewriter sound alone
at midnight,
in an endless symphony.

(Pintura del artista ruso Alexander Averin)
Toward the center of things,
love is priced at a kiss an ounce,
and the frequent silence shelters itself
in the unpublished stories
of closed eyes.

A hand in a white glove wanders
across the cold terrains of a naked wall,
and in the command all measures trace
the red circumference of an apple.

Timidly your fingers wander, enraptured,
across the immediate body of my delirium;
while all embassies protest,
here, in the shadows,
we laugh.

Suddenly you realize it is not the hour
for the dream to go strolling,
and abruptly the writing halts,
the stock exchange closes,
the measures no longer spin,
all embassies fall silent,
and the Earth has ceased to spin in reverse.

Then the end has arrived,
with watches parading along the boulevard,
and an exhausted breath without light
calms the foam—
and in a corner
there remains
only you.

Secretos - Secrets

I imagined you traversing all the clocks:
at midnight your body became nectar,
and all dreams fell upon their knees,
while the shutter released
its favorite songs.

You arrived, among libidinous seagulls,
you lashed my illusions against the universe—
the tiny universe of absorbed campfires—
and the old sorrows drowned in a kiss.

But the quadrilateral desires of the heart
also fly north when oblivion arrives,
and no moon rolls toward your womb:
the laws of the apple have vanished.

Eve walks alone in paradise,
bearing a new sin in her hands,
while the diminished twilight
contemplates the illusory vastness
of our love.

Natal - Native

(Casa Consistorial vista desde el río Guayas se aprecia a la derecha el vapor "Guayas", primer barco a vapor que se construyó en Sudamérica y que se incluyó en el escudo nacional y el barco "Chile" de la "Pacific Steam Navigation Company" a la izquierda, Oleo de Segundo Espinel - Casa Consistorial seen from the Guayas River you can see on the right the steam "Guayas", the first steamboat that was built in South America and that was included in the national shield and the ship "Chile" of the "Pacific Steam Navigation Company" a the left, Oil of Segundo Espinel, Guayaquil Octubre 9 de 1841)

cuando le dan un paseo por Venus;
pero, mi malhechora, las fragancias
de la vergüenza nos atraían al planeta
Tierra.

(Pintura del artista norteamericano
Daniel Gerhartz)
I wanted to play at being a poet;
but in inaccessible gleams
the lemon trees painted me in shadows,
and I escaped from everyone to laugh,
for the windows were open.

I found a place where crickets
fell silent as I wrote,
and then the winds began to blow
toward ten o’clock
on an August day.

I listened to you—from afar—while you looked at others,
and dragonflies smiled into infinity;
and I do not know if it was the books or the benches,
the lamplight accomplices
of my first letters of love.

My hopes were sketched like an apple
carried on a stroll through Venus;
but, my mischief-maker, the fragrances
of shame drew us back
to planet Earth.

Emigración - Emigration

(Vista de la Calle de la Orilla desde el Estero de Morillo, actual Calle Roca, por Barthelemy Lauvergne, Litógrafo: Adolphe Jean Baptiste Bayot en "Voyage autour du Monde executé pendant les années 1836 et 1837 sur la Corvette la Bonite" 1841-1852 - View of the Street of the Shore from the Estero de Morillo, present-day Roca Street, by Barthelemy Lauvergne, Lithographer: Adolphe Jean Baptiste Bayot in "Voyage autour du Monde executé pendant les années 1836 et 1837 sur la Corvette la Bonite" 1841-1852, Guayaquil, 1836 - 1837)
Todos los silencios pronuncian tu nombre
tus palabras me acarician en sueñoscomo velándome por las noches;
mas, en el desenlace de mis delirios
no te encuentro y tiemblo.

Daniel Gerhartz)

Every silence pronounces your name;
your words caress me in dreams,
as if keeping vigil through the night—
yet in the unraveling of my delusions
I do not find you, and I tremble.

All worlds bow to your shadow,
yet the roses in my books are already dry;
shipwrecked birds now migrate
toward the dead pendulum of my sorrows.

And what shall become of me
without the enigma of your mouth?
Destiny sends its telegram into the abyss.
I knock again and again at the door of your skin’s contours,
but hear only myself.

If there is no answer to my foolish cries,
if in the lunar waters are forgotten
the promises your eyes once painted upon me—
how shall I breathe your memories tomorrow,
at noon?

Cero Horas - Zero hours

Pedro Menéndez Gilbert - Currently there is no estuary or temple, in its place is the Plaza Colón and the beginning of the tunnel that crosses the Cerro del Carmen from South to North and connects the Malecon with the Av. Pedro Menéndez Gilbert, Guayaquil 2019)

Te has ausentado de mis sueños.
Ayer
no pude dejar de llorar.
Te desafié a que no lo haría
pero no,
no pude sostener mi palabra,
no pude,
no pude,
no pude, Amor.

¿Cómo poder hacerlo?
Recordaba:
tus manos llenas de teorías
que no querrán acariciarme
tus ojos
color de corteza,
tu pelo bailando
al ritmo del vendaval,
tu carita plenilunia,
y tu frescor,
y Tú...
A ti
que tantas veces tuve
entre mis brazos de agua
te me escaparás en la orilla
como una
caracola.

Tu figura
que se deslizaba
como una caricia
en mis oníricas noches
ya no está.

¿Dónde te buscaré
Amor?
¿Dónde quedarán
los valles de ternura,
el jugo de fruta de tus labios,
el secreto de tus brazos
Pandora?
¿Qué haré con las sílabas
de tu nombre?
¿En qué baúl?
¿Bajo cuántas llaves
guardaré estas lágrimas,
estos poemas?

Hoy es un nuevo día.
Ayer
te recordaba.
A pesar
de todo
no regresas a mis sueños.
Por eso
despierto a media noche
y escribo:
a tus labios de manzanas
que no me besarán
a tus dedos marinos
que no me enredarán
con el vaivén de tus caprichos.

No;
Ven.
Te amo.
Perdóname
He comprendido
que me haces falta.

You have vanished from my dreams.
Yesterday
I could not cease to weep.
I challenged myself that I would not,
but no—
I could not keep my word,
I could not,
I could not,
I could not, Love.

How could I?
I remembered:
your hands, full of theories,
(Pintura del artista ruso Vladimir Volegov)
unwilling now to caress me;
your eyes, the color of bark,
your hair dancing
to the rhythm of the gale,
your plenilunar face,
your freshness,
and You...
You, whom so many times I held
within my arms of water,
you will escape me upon the shore,
like a seashell.

Your figure,
slipping like a caress
through my dream-filled nights,
is no more.

Where shall I seek you,
Love?
Where will remain
the valleys of tenderness,
the fruit-juice of your lips,
the secret of your arms,
Pandora?
What shall I do with the syllables
of your name?
In what chest,
under how many keys,
shall I guard these tears,
these poems?

Today is a new day.
Yesterday
I remembered you.
Yet still
you do not return to my dreams.
That is why
I wake at midnight
and I write:
to your apple lips
that will not kiss me,
to your marine fingers
that will not entwine me
with the sway of your whims.

No;
you are far from me, and there is no way
to tell you:
Come.
I love you.
Forgive me.
I have understood—
I need you.

Unos Niños - Some Children

(Calle Rocafuerte, se pueden apreciar al fondo las torres de la Iglesia de La Merced y a la derecha unos niños jugando a la raya, por Ernest Charton - Rocafuerte Street, you can see in the background the towers of the Church of La Merced and on the right some children playing at bay, by Ernest Charton, Guayaquil 1849)

pues, de pronto algo incita mi mirada;

- Vaya dando limosna patroncito

Caminé por los parques-cama-bancas
donde vi lacerándose las almas,
donde se forjan sus pies de peregrinos,
donde matan su infancia... unos niños;

y me encontré a Juanito betunero,
vi gritar a José periodiquero
vi llorar a Carlitos panadero...

¿Dónde se quedarán sus manos de betún?
¿dónde se escuchará su voz de madrugada?
¡quien pensará en su piel de levadura
y sentir absolutamente nada!

Dejarán su mirada en letanía,
unos niños,
en la morgue;

mis memorias no evocan

My worn-out memories evoke
the moments of yesterday, which are no more—
of games and fairy tales
that still soften my heart.

And through the harsh, indomitable streets
of noise, of liquor, of beggars,
where ineffable feelings explode
and leave me undone,

suddenly something catches my gaze:
dirty hands, worn-out rags,
the face of a child, soiled and weary,
and his fearful voice speaking from afar:

“Shall I shine? Shall I carry? Shall I sell?”
his unwanted smell fills the air,
his sleepless eyes fixed upon me,
confusing the legends in my mind...

“Give me alms, kind sir—
(Pintura del artista norteamericano Daniel Gerhartz)
you will see I have not eaten in days...
please, do not be cruel,
I cannot return with empty hands...
with empty hands...”

I walked through the park-benches turned to beds,
where I saw souls unraveling,
where their pilgrim feet are forged,
where their childhoods are slain... some children.

I wandered through the darkened portals
where cardboard and cold are their bread,
where dreams vanish,
where they have already forgotten “I love you.”

I walked the whole day
and I met Juanito, the shoeshine boy,
I heard José, the newsboy, shouting,
I saw Carlitos, the baker’s boy, weeping...

Where will their shoeshine hands remain?
Where will their voices be heard at dawn?
Who will think of their skin of yeast
and feel absolutely nothing?

They will leave their eyes in a litany—
some children—
in the morgue;
they will end like Luis, the gang member,
without a mother to mourn them.

They will never know warm sheets,
nor a toy at Christmas;
the sidewalks have never sung to them
“sawdust, sawdust.”

Since then
my memories no longer evoke
the moments of yesterday, but fears—
for these stories are not few...

I gathered in my bags sorrows, evils,
and I wandered through the darkened portals,
I walked through the park-benches turned to beds,
and listened to the quietest sidewalks,

where the cartons of a night remain,
where their pilgrim feet are forged,
and their childhoods are slain without laughter...
some children.
