La Primera Vez - The first time

(Felipe Huaman Poma de Ayala, cronista indígena del Virreinato del Perú 1534-1615, ilustración de su obra "Nueva Crónica y Buen Gobierno" Biblioteca del Instituto de Cooperación de Iberoamérica, Madrid, primera referencia de una ilustración de la ciudad de Guayaquil - Felipe Huaman Poma de Ayala, indigenous chronicler of the Viceroyalty of Peru 1534-1615, illustration of his work "New Chronicle and Good Government" Library of the Ibero-American Cooperation Institute, Madrid, first reference of an illustration of the city of Guayaquil)

No hubo tierra ni casa abandonada,
el camino y los árboles fugaron;
sólo el río y la brisa murmuraron
la canción que jamás fuera entonada.

No hubo campo ni noche despejada...
un instante a los dos nos olvidaron;
tus ojitos delincuentes confesaron
la pasión que llegara inesperada.

Como si no existiera el universo:
no hubo mundo ni historia... no hubo verso
ni ciudad, ni oficinas, ni niñez...

no hubo besos ni mesa... no hubo lecho;
sólo un fuego ignorado por mi pecho
ardió al mirarte por primera vez.

(Pintura de los artistas ucranianos
 Inessa Kitaichik & Michael Garmash)

There was no land, no abandoned house;
the road and the trees fled away.
Only the river and the breeze whispered
the song that was never sung.

There was no field, no clear night—
for an instant we both were forgotten;
your mischievous eyes confessed
the passion that arrived unexpectedly.

As if the universe itself did not exist:
there was no world, no history, no verse,
no city, no office, no childhood...

there were no kisses, no table, no bed;
only a fire long unknown to my chest
burned when I looked at you for the first time.

estará quien me espere, estará quien reciba

It is along this road that one reaches love:
a house lit in the middle of life,
with open windows and my dog at the threshold.

My wife by the fire and the table set
will be waiting for me when I knock at the gate.
(Pintura de los artistas ucranianos
 Inessa Kitaichik & Michael Garmash)

I delight in thoughts with wandering eyes,
that silence breaks within her lover’s embrace.

Hope returns when I behold her smile,
and sorrows are buried in the steps I take,
for I know she is mother, she is woman, she is child...

It is along this road that one reaches love.

And to the house alight at the end of the way,
to the river’s raft and to my sheltered bed,
where I keep memories of the most beautiful things.

Nothing is more necessary than knowing one is loved,
and feeling life stir within the chest.

I am far, I know. I am alone, I know.
But I know that when I arrive exhausted at my villa,
to that villa where the warmth of home burns,
there will be one who waits for me, who will receive me—
with feverish lips, with hands of silk,
with ardent gaze, with soul of a nymph,
with anxious arms and fruitful womb
(where children sleep who will bring joys)
to my body thirsty for illusions and peace...

Tonight the night grows long and the willows sigh...
It is along this road that one reaches love.

When the wind strips the flowering countryside,
and my beloved enfolds me in her wedding dress,
and her hand releases the captive caresses,
the curious stars will shine within,
and our house will forever remain alight...

It is along this road that one reaches love:
to love enkindled in the miracle of joy.

Encuentro con Ella - Encounter with her

She is all that—if I did not have her, I lost;
she is the tender illusion I misplaced one night,
she is the desert flower, what I am, what I was,
she is my white lie, my hope, my faith.

Her eyes are the sky, a dagger, love itself;
she has a soul of dreams, she fears farewell,
she understands the past, reproaches no mistake—
and every time she kisses me, we melt together.

And if there were a way to find her on Earth,
if I were lucky enough to meet her one day,
I would give her the life and the love she holds.

I would say: “Darling, from birth I loved you!”
and I would paint a star upon her soul...
If I were lucky enough to encounter her.

Dominio - Dominion

Este cuadro está expuesto en el Vaticano en el Palacio de Gobierno de la Compañía de Jesús - mage of a part of the Malecon in the city where you can see the Towers of the Church of San Agustín and the Virgen de la Soledad (Company of Jesus). This painting is displayed in the Vatican at the Government Palace of the Society of Jesus. Guayaquil 1716)

por temor me resigno a contemplarte;

There are moments when you forget I love you,
and I feel the urge to hate you—
to go mad and even kill you,
though I know without you I too would die.

I would like to hold you tightly,
but out of fear I resign myself to watch you;
I do not even dare to touch you,
and in unbearable anguish I wait, I wait...

For if I try, you shatter my caress,
and with contempt, your malice
sinks into my throat with tears,

forcing from me a phrase: “Never again!”
yet then, with a single gesture where you are,
you bind me once more with your charm.

Renacer - Rebirth

(The engraving depicts the capture of Guayaquil by Woodes Rogers on April 24, 1709, and is a good example of the way in which the privateers and pirates idealized their adventures when they wrote them. The picture belongs in the book published in Amsterdam in 1717 entitled "VOYAGE AUTOUR DU MONDE COMMENCE IN 1708 FINI IN 1711 FOR LE CAPITAINE WOODES ROGERS", the edition belongs to the rich library of the Central University of Quito.)

Puede seguir el sol cegándome los ojos;

Si tú estás junto a mí no necesito nada

The sun may go on blinding my eyes;
in the desert the wind may strike my being—
but at the end you gaze with passion upon my ruins,
for even in hell I know I must love you.

Perhaps the oceans, in their many rages,
will deny me the pleasure of their fresh waters;
but I know that, seeing me die in my desires,
you will give me tenderness to drink from your tears.

And I will remain regal and bold within your gaze.
If you are beside me, I need nothing;
but if the fatal moment of your farewell arrives,

I know you will kill me, yet I will be reborn
in the cruel memory of your harmonious voice,
and in the nocturnal, cold arms of another woman.

Vivir - To Live

(La ciudad de Guayaquil vista desde el río, Expedición Malaspina 1789-1794 - The city of Guayaquil seen from the river, Malaspina Expedition 1789-1794)
Si he de vivir será por ti tan sólo;
por tu cuerpo que siento pequeñito,
por tu boca que beso y descontrolo
que me obliga a gritar: "¡Te necesito!"

Sí, viviré, lo haré por esta sed
que demarca mis límites mortales,
viviré por tu nombre en mi pared,
por tu respiración en los cristales

y por los continentes descubiertos
en la luz de tus párpados abiertos
pues no existe ninguna otra salida

y esta noche de luna me sentencio
a través de tu tiempo y mi silencio
adorarte por el resto de mi vida.

(Pintura del artista ruso Vladimir Volegov)

If I am to live, it will be for you alone;
for your body, which I feel so small within,
for your mouth, whose kiss unravels me,
that compels me to cry: “I need you!”

Yes, I will live—for this thirst
that marks the boundaries of my mortal fate;
I will live by your name upon my wall,
by your breath upon the glass,

and for the continents discovered
in the light of your opened eyes—
for there is no other way out.

And on this moonlit night I sentence myself,
through your time and through my silence,
to worship you for the rest of my life.

Este Amor - This Love

This love that does not know where to go,
so often it gazes at tranquil fireflies,
until its insect life must fade
in the light of your moist eyes—
like a full moon overflowing,
transparent in a majestic lake.

This love that you left abandoned
in the furtive kiss of an afternoon,
at the cry of a wounded affection,
sobbed as you departed, cowardly;
in the saddest verses it hid,
and a muse, a poet named it so.

Your name was Sandra Jaqueline,
and I loved you too deeply, too soon;
and if this is your farewell, then it is the end,
and for the last time you call me: “fool!”
This love that does not know where to go
has ceased to write to your love.

Renunciación - Renunciation

(Vista de las ruinas de Guayaquil después del incendio, fotografía de D C Endara, de Panamá - View of the ruins of Guayaquil after the fire, photo by D C Endara, from Panama, Ovtubre 1896)
Tú serás ese día cuando el sol
por llorar demasiado se apagó;
tú serás la lectura en mi farol
del poema que nunca se escribió...

Me darás en consuelo tu recuerdo
en las flores que lleves a mi tumba;

tremolando las rimas en mi mente;

.
(Pintura del artista ruso Vladimir Volegov)

You will be that day when the sun,
from too much weeping, went out;
you will be the reading in my lantern,
of the poem that was never written.

You will give me comfort in memory,
in the flowers you lay upon my grave;
you will be all in which I am lost,
and the night when my soul succumbs.

You will be my most painful joy,
trembling the rhymes within my mind;
I will see you walking, beautiful, with another,
and you will be the wrinkles upon my brow.

And if you wish to know
whether I can still love you with such devotion,
this tender illusion I will conceal,
and biting my lips I will tell you:
“It has been some time since I no longer love you.”

It is currently a regenerated street and there is a statue of the Illustrious Numa Pompilio Llona where the first deteriorated house was located, Guayaquil 2019)

Alma mía, no llego a comprender
esta pésima suerte... ¡di qué has hecho!

Until yesterday I was happy—only until then;
I felt you, heart, leap from my chest.
Tell me, who gave you the right
to hurl yourself into the claws of love?

My soul, I cannot understand
this wretched fate—say, what have you done?
Say why my dream lies so shattered,
when I have only just been born!

You see, my sweet and bitter life,
that by your indecision you are left alone.
Defending herself, the bold one says:

“Your brain is guilty, for it transformed her
from woman into a country rose,
when her only master was still a girl!”

El Ciego - The blind man

y aprendí desde entonces a mirar;
¡hubiese preferido quedar ciego!
casi muero al mirarla ayer pasar.

I saw her eyes shining like stars,
(Pintura del artista ruso Vladimir Volegov)
and her hand entwined like ivy;
I saw her lips, two beautiful bays—
but not her heart, which was of stone.

I saw an earring hang with ease,
and her face filled with innocence;
I saw a court march to royalty—
but not the moment they pronounced my sentence.

I saw the longest nights smiling,
and milk spilling across the floor;
I saw her two golden braids hanging—
but I never saw she never loved me at all.

I saw the world racing inside my mind,
and the soft music of my piano;
I saw a rose bloom upon her brow—
but I did not see how small her love was.

I burned for not seeing she was the fire,
and I learned since then to truly see;
but, Lord, do You not hear my plea?
I would have preferred to remain blind—
I almost died yesterday, watching her pass.
