03H00

(Templo de la Concepción identificado como Iglesia de Santo Domingo por Julio Boilly de la expedición Alcide d'Orbigny - Temple of La Concepcion identified as Santo Domingo Church by Julio Boilly of the Alcide d'Orbigny expedition, Guayaquil 1827)

Mirando unos momentos a tu foto
encuentro más razones para amarte
miro tu cuerpo, pelo, cejas, ojos
y pareces a ratos tú mirarme.

te quiero tanto y tú no estás conmigo...

Gazing at your photo for a few moments,
I find ever more reasons to love you;
I behold your body, hair, your brows, your eyes—
and at times you seem to gaze back at me.

(Pintura del artista norteamericano Daniel Gerhartz)
Eyes—eyes of absence,
of pale, mischievous, and dreamlike light,
reminding me that you close them
each time I lean to kiss you.

Eyebrows—your brows are pathways
leading always to melancholy:
I love you so, and you are not with me...
you are my solitary melody.

Your hair—hair the wind unravels,
as once my hands unraveled it...
I search for you in secret,
with my sorrow in the golden cornfield.

And your lips are brimming with love—
they laugh, they kiss, they command, they speak, they fall silent.
I long to feel today upon my mouth the warmth
where my soul dissolves...

And you... how can you expect me to love you,
if you will not come to soothe this anguish?
How you make me suffer in this way!
Yet I love you—and I love you all the more.

12H00

(Rafts and houses on the boardwalk of the Guayas River, Guayaquil 1829)

Te necesito riéndote a mi lado

Ven conmigo, despacio... vuelve a mí
y olvidemos el mundo en un instante.
Recuperaré el tiempo que perdí:
juntemos nuestras bocas, hoy, como antes...

Quedan tantas preguntas por hacerte:
¿de dónde vienes? ¿qué estrella eres tú?
¿quién eres que me obligas a quererte
mientras pintas mis sueños con azul?

Y en la soledad... ¡cuánta falta me hacen
tus palabras, tus bromas!... ¿qué te digo?
sólo quiero abrazarte, quiero amarte
pero tú no estás conmigo.

It is strange... it seems you are near:
your fragrance lingers in the air,
and in my eyes your face is reflected,
your memories grow ever stronger.
(Pintura del artista norteamericano Daniel Gerhartz)

Love, love, I am loving you so deeply
I do not know how I could love you more.
I need you laughing here beside me,
but I turn and you are not there.

Come with me, gently... return to me,
and let us forget the world in an instant.
I will recover the time I lost:
let our mouths meet today, as once before...

So many questions remain to ask you:
From where do you come? What star are you?
Who are you, that compel me to love you,
while you paint my dreams in blue?

And in solitude... how I miss
your words, your laughter! What can I say?
I only want to embrace you, to love you—
but you are not with me.

(Vista de la perspectiva de varias casas y locales de la ciudad vieja, Joseph Cordero, Expediciòn Marìtima de Alejandro Malaspina - Perspective view of several houses and premises of the old city, Joseph Cordero, Maritime Expedition of Alejandro Malaspina, Guayaquil  1789-1794)

Me has hecho tan feliz con tu mirada

obsesiones que son inaccesibles;

 Daniel Gerhartz)

You have made me so happy with your gaze
that my eyes no longer know how to weep;
but if I fall silent and say nothing,
do not tell me I no longer love you.

For at times I am drunk with infinite
obsessions beyond my reach;
I fear the lies,
the waking from this dream, its sudden end.

I love you... do you know how much I love you?
How many seagulls dwell upon the sea?
How many lights descend from the hill?
If they are many... still I love you more.

And if at times I stray from your side,
it is for fear of causing you more pain;
but if this is not to be in love,
let Christ descend and tell me “No!”

(Dibujo a la orilla del Río Guayas se aprecia la esquina norte de la Casa Consistorial lo que hoy es el Municipio, intersección de las calles Sucre y Malecón actual Plaza Sucre, se aprecian al fondo el Colegio Javier y la primera torre del reloj de los Jesuítas, M. de Sainson expedición Alcides d'Orvigny - Drawing on the shore of the Guayas River, you can see the north corner of the Town Hall, which today is the Municipality, intersection of Sucre streets and present-day Malecon Plaza, the Javier College and the first Jesuit clock tower are visible in the background , M. de Sainson Alcides d'Orvigny expedition, Guayaquil 1827)

¿En qué estarás pensando ahora, amor?
Ahora que no estás conmigo aquí
¿dormirás abrazada a mi calor
o estarás tú también pensando en mí?

Cinco horas me he pasado meditando

No, no sé si yo podré engañarte,
lo que sé es que sin ti no sé vivir,
no sé vivir...

(Pintura del artista norteamericano
Steve Hanks)

What are you thinking now, my love,
now that you are no longer here with me?
Are you sleeping embraced by my warmth,
or are you too thinking of me?

Five hours I have spent in meditation,
on the night and on your memory—
is it that I am falling in love,
or is it that I feel I lose you?

Perhaps because in my sorrow you are present,
or perhaps I prefer you near;
if my mind has been unsettled by you,
could it be that from today I love you?

And when the time comes to look at you,
will I be able to feign what I feel?
No, I do not know if I can deceive you;
what I know is that without you I cannot live,
I cannot live...

Amor de Pobre - Love of the Poor

(Vista de Guayaquil desde el Río Guayas desde el antiguo estero Carrión hoy calle Mejía hasta la casa Cosistorial actual Municipio, dibujo de la Gleason's Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion 1853 - View of Guayaquil from the Guayas River from the old Carrión estuary today Mejía street to the current Cosistorial house Municipality, drawing of the Gleason's Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion 1853)

Cuántas veces dije "quiero"
cuántas otras la mirada
levanté incansable al cielo
para ver inmensa tu alma...

Pero tú... indiferente
desde arriba me mirabas;
eras algo que se mira,
que se mira y no se alcanza.

(Pintura del artista norteamericano Steve Hanks)

How many times I said “I want,”
how many times I lifted my gaze,
tirelessly, toward the heavens,
to behold your soul, immense...

But you... indifferent,
gazed down at me from above;
you were something to be looked upon,
something seen but never reached.

Leve Gaviota - Light Seagull

se partirán tus besos de manzana;
pero tu boca quedará en mis labios
tal como una semilla germinada.

Pasará tu marea de deseos,
se romperán tus redes de ternura;

semilla, espuma, causes, barcas y alga
como leve gaviota que se entierra
tu recuerdo me dolerá en el alma.

Even if you painted me in bitterness,
I will be glad for what little remains;
and even if the mute foliage burns,
(Pintura de los artistas ucranianos
 Inessa Kitaichik & Michael Garmash)
the timber of your womb will remain.

Your words of topaz will take flight,
your kisses of apple will break apart;
yet your mouth will remain upon my lips,
like a seed already germinated.

Your tide of desires will ebb away,
your nets of tenderness will be torn;
yet upon my sand your body will remain,
traced with seaweed and foam.

Ah! it pains me that you may belong to another,
and the murmur of your gaze wounds me;
yet within my eyes your eyes will remain,
like a melody of mountains.

But if mountains and timber fade,
seed, foam, currents, boats, and seaweed—
like a light seagull buried in the sand,
your memory will ache within my soul.

Nada Queda - Nothing Remains

(Vista de Guayaquil desde los cimientos que quedaron de la Iglesia de Santo Domingo en la Plaza Colón luego del incendio de Octubre 5 y 6 de 1896 - View of Guayaquil from the foundations that remained of the Church of Santo Domingo in Plaza Colon after the fire of October 5 and 6 of 1896)

Como si fueras el primer amor
tus manos me vistieron con su seda,
el riachuelo escuchaba tu rumor;
pero ahora, de aquello, nada queda...

En vano busco acariciar tu cuello;

As if you were my first love,
your hands clothed me in their silk;
(Pintura del artista norteamericano Steve Hanks)
the brook listened to your murmur—
but now, of all that, nothing remains.

In vain I seek to caress your neck;
in vain, in vain I search for something
to remind me of the color of your hair,
for nothing remains, nothing remains...

Nothing remains... not even the prayer of your palms,
nor the calm dance of your fingers,
nor the impossible dream of our souls,
nor the restless fire of your quiet eyes.

Nothing remains... not even the rite of your lips,
nor the gentle drizzle of your voice,
nor the silent pardon of my wrongs,
nor the words you spoke in farewell.

No—pardon... still something clings:
from my eyes, those of an unhappy traveler,
a tear falls upon the earth,
to die crying out that I love you.

Como las Cosas - Like the Things

(Muelle y Capitanía - Dock and Captaincy, Guayaquil 1863)

Si no hallara a tu boca, dulcemente,
extraviada en la mía, o tu cintura
no hiciera estremecer a mi alma dura

If I did not find your mouth, sweetly
lost within mine, or if your waist
did not make my hardened soul tremble,
I would stop loving you—suddenly.

Yet intact you remain within my mind,
where a poem of love and bitterness
caresses your candid figure,
recalling that you are no longer here.

And the empty nights you once filled?
And the lifeless things you touched—
will they love you as I loved you?

No, no! ... no, they appear so silent.
Love, I wish I could be like those things
that seem to exist without remembering you.

Arráncame los Ojos - Tear out my eyes

(Guayaquil reducido a cenizas aproximadamente a un mes después del incendio grande de 1896 con el monumento a Rocafuerte aún en pie visto desde la esquina de las callles Luque y Pichincha - Guayaquil reduced to ashes about a month after the big fire of 1896 with the monument to Rocafuerte still standing as seen from the corner of the Luque and Pichincha streets)

Otras veces me siento hipnotizado

When I look at you, I am enraptured;
when I look at you, you remain serene.
The afternoon drifts into a lilac death,
or the weary clock at last stands still.

At times I feel myself hypnotized
when my gaze discovers your body;
my heart within my chest begins to sway,
as if something strange had touched my spirit.

I lose myself beholding you so simple,
or as my glance brushes against your cheek,
or I perish gazing at your crimson lips.

But when your soul no longer wishes
that I should look at you... tear out my eyes!
yet I will go on gazing at you, even in death.

Imagina - Imagine

(Vista parcial de la ciudad luego del incendio grande, Guayaquil Octubre 5 y 6 de 1896 - Partial view of the city after the big fire, Guayaquil October 5 and 6, 1896)
Cuando sola te encuentres... imagina
que yo regreso y corre a la ventana;

nostalgia. Pero sigue vida, ufana;
cuando sola te encuentres imagina

que van quedándose en tu historia impresos
la locura excitante de mis besos.
Si no regreso corre las ventanas,

escucha el enigmático murmullo
del viento y escucharás unas campanas
cantando que soy eternamente tuyo.

(Pintura de los artistas ucranianos
 Inessa Kitaichik & Michael Garmash)

When you are alone... imagine
that I return, and you run to the window;
when you feel my mouth near yours,
wrap yourself, my love, within the curtain.

And do not let yourself be seen by the one who walks—
it may not be me, but an arcane nostalgia.
Yet live on, proud and defiant;
when you are alone, imagine

that in your story remain imprinted
the thrilling madness of my kisses.
If I do not return, close the windows,

listen to the enigmatic murmur
of the wind, and you will hear the bells
singing that I am eternally yours.
