Tan Sólo Amor - Only Love

(La misma vista de la ciudad antes y después del incendio grande - The same view of the city before and after the big fire, Guayaquil Octubre 5 y 6 de 1896)

De mañana verán tus tiernos ojos,
del jardín, que una rosa ha de brotar;

mas otro hasta tu puerta ha de llegar;

"¿Qué me falta, qué causa éste dolor,
qué me estremece tanto todavía?".
Y a lo lejos diré: "Tan sólo amor".

(Pintura del artista ruso Serge Marshennikov)

In the morning your tender eyes will see
in the garden a rose begin to bloom;
but when you gaze upon its petals so red,
something from your wing will be missing.

An intense desire will be born within you—
like a child, you will play in the rain;
yet you will feel an immense cold,
and something in your chest will be missing.

Unaware, you will await my return,
but another will arrive at your door;
he will give you but a kiss upon the cheek,
and something in your life will be missing.

And you will ask yourself by night and day:
“What is missing, what causes this pain,
what still shakes me so deeply?”
And from afar I will answer: “Only love.”

Poemas de Viento - Poems to the Wind

(Malecón y 9 de Octubre, Guayaquil 1900)
Aunque el tiempo y la distancia
nos llegara a separar
por medio de estas letras
me tendrás que recordar...

Though time and distance
may come to part us,
through these letters
you will have to remember me...

Cuando separe el tiempo y la distancia
nuestras bocas y maten lo que siento,
cuando ya no me toque tu fragancia
y no grite poemas para el viento...

... volveré a las aulas ya vacías
con un cuaderno viejo bajo el brazo,
volverán a mi mente aquellos días
y buscaré tus besos y tu abrazo.

Pasaré y llegaré hasta las bancas
que escribieron la historia de éste amor
y a ciegas buscaré tus manos blancas,
tu cintura, tu rostro y tu calor...

Though time and distance
may come to part us,
through these letters
you will have to remember me...

When time and distance
separate our mouths and slay what I feel,
when your fragrance no longer touches me,
and I no longer cry poems to the wind...

... I will return to the empty classrooms
with an old notebook beneath my arm;
those days will return to my mind,
and I will seek your kisses and your embrace.

I will wander back to the benches
that inscribed the story of this love,
and blindly I will search for your white hands,
your waist, your face, and your warmth...

When farewell arrives and proves eternal,
lifeless, something will remain upon the ground—
your portrait will endure within my notebook,
and my poems to the wind I shall cry aloud!

Como Tú Quieres - As you will

(Río Guayas y Puerto de Guayaquil, dos imagenes tomadas desde el Cerro de Santa Ana, antes del gran incendio de Octubre 5 y 6 de 1896 - Río Guayas and Puerto de Guayaquil, two images taken from the Santa Ana Hill, before the great fire of October 5 and 6 of 1896)

Yo no puedo enseñar mi faz desnuda,
yo no sé perdonar a quien me hiere

 Inessa Kitaichik & Michael Garmash)

I cannot love as you love,
I cannot forget as you forget;
I am not good, Lord, as you are,
nor do the sorrows of other lives afflict me.

I cannot bare my face,
I do not know how to forgive those who wound me,
and if someone seeks my help,
at times I fail to give what is asked.

I have no words that could
spread hope among others;
my verses are not the verses
that those who wish to leave their tears behind would read.

I am not like that... my love is very small,
I am a man bathed in pain;
yet how I wish that in my dream
I might be wounded by the scent of a flower...

And though I am a meditative being,
I know there are many things to learn.
God, you can love the whole world;
I only know how to love one woman.

Mensajera - Messenger

(Varias vistas parciales de la ciudad desde las faldas del cerro Santa Ana antes del incendio de 1896 - Several partial views of the city from the slopes of the Santa Ana hill before the fire of 1896, 1880-1895 Guayaquil)
Es tu amor la paloma que perdida
va dejando mensajes en la nada
porque toma la ruta equivocada
que debería llevarla hasta mi vida.

Vuela ciega, nerviosa y confundida;
tiene rotas sus alas... va cansada
y es al rato una sombra enamorada
prisionera, apagada y sin salida.

Pasa un día y otro día pasará
y como siempre el ave no vendrá
y leyendo poemas desde el monte

miro cómo otra noche triste avanza;
vuelvo a casa mirando el horizonte
oscuro, falso y falto de esperanza.

(Pintura del artista francés Louis Teserras)

Your love is the dove, lost,
leaving its messages into nothingness,
for it has taken the wrong route—
the one that should have led it to my life.

It flies blind, nervous, and confused;
its wings are broken... it is weary,
and soon it becomes a shadow in love,
imprisoned, extinguished, without escape.

One day passes, another will pass,
and as always the bird will not arrive;
and reading poems upon the hillside,

I watch another sorrowful night advance;
I return home gazing at the horizon—
dark, false, and void of hope.

Poema del Condenado - Poem of the Condemned

(Escalinatas que suben al cerro Santana en la calle Numa Pompilio Llona en las peñas 1995 -2019 - Stairs that climb the Santana hill on Numa Pompilio Llona street in the rocks 1995-2019 Guayaquil)

¿Cómo podría yo dejar de amarte?
¿cómo dejar, de pronto, el sentimiento
a la deriva?¿cómo voy a olvidarte
sin morir de amargura en el intento?

di intangible mujer ¿piensas acaso
dejar mi corazón así que insista
bebiéndose su llanto de payaso
y fingiendo una sonrisa masoquista?

Hoy recuerdo que mía fue la culpa
al no dejarte la primera vez
en libertad... no sirve la disculpa;
tratar volver... es una estupidez.

Y así calla mi boca y no te llamo
aunque en silencio sólo yo me engaño
y así te pienso, te imagino y te amo
aunque este amor tan sólo me haga daño.

(Pintura del artista francés Louis Teserras)

How could I ever stop loving you?
How could I suddenly cast the feeling
adrift? How could I forget you
without dying of bitterness in the attempt?

Tell me, intangible woman, do you intend
to leave my heart persisting in its plea,
drinking its clownish tears,
and feigning a masochistic smile?

Today I recall it was my fault—
for not freeing you the first time.
Apologies are useless;
to try returning is sheer folly.

And so my mouth is silent, I do not call you,
though in silence I only deceive myself;
and so I think of you, imagine you, and love you—
though this love only brings me pain.

Algo Falta - Something missing

(Vista desde la Planchada, se puede observar al templo de la Concepción con su fachada mirando al río Guayas - View from La Planchada, you can see the Temple of Conception with its facade facing the Guayas River, Guayaquil 1868)

No me das tu caricia... va extinguida
tropezando sus pasos con la nada;
no me toca tu mágica mirada,

y mi propia alegría me hace daño...
sólo soy un soñador que está soñándote.

Miro al mundo rozando tu recuerdo;
vuelvo a mí, me doy cuenta que te pierdo
aunque débil y ciego siga amándote...

(Pintura de los artistas ucranianos
 Inessa Kitaichik & Michael Garmash)

Something is missing among my things—
the lost F note of my flute:
you, my beloved, so distant, so weary,
so unhappily you wander through my life.

You no longer give me your caress... it fades,
stumbling its steps into nothingness;
your magical gaze no longer touches me,
your voice no longer kisses my wound.

What was common now seems strange,
and even my own joy wounds me...
I am only a dreamer, dreaming of you.

I look upon the world brushing your memory;
I return to myself, I realize I lose you—
though weak and blind, I go on loving you.

Sin Salida - No way out

Cuadro de la autoría del naturista italiano Gaetano Osculati en Abril de 1847 - Panorama of the city and port of Guayaquil in Ecuador, taken from the Polvorosa mound, You can see the Church of the Conception with its facade facing the hill, then rebuilt and finally disappeared in the fire of 1896. Picture of the authorship of the Italian naturist Gaetano Osculati in April 1847)

y no te puedo arrancar

Down the street at a slow pace,
a couple walks hand in hand;
they linger in the shade,
for the sun is blazing.

And the kisses between them
remind me of the love
that until yesterday filled my life
with joy and with illusion.

Tears well up, and my eyes
behold them with pain;
like a fool I run away,
not knowing where I go.

And you have left me with no escape—
you are part of my life,
and I cannot tear you away.
You told me that you loved me,
and then those words
never mattered anymore.

I gave myself in a single moment,
I stood against the whole world,
to love you without restraint...
and that you never knew how to cherish.

Aniversario - Anniversary

"View of Guayaquil and the Guayas River. In the foreground Ciudad Vieja; and in the background, Ciudad Nueva. Drawing made during the Malaspina expedition, made between 1789 and 1794. Signed by the sailor José Cordero, who during the expedition also acted as a cartoonist)

Where have those kisses gone,
forged upon my lips almost a year ago?
They gathered a thousand stumbles—
I saw them, I saw them wounding me.

This wind deceives me again and again,
and a wandering memory has broken apart,
casting cruel stones into the torrent
of this sorrowfully saddened love.

Illusion and my dreams no longer move;
your silence has left me solitary...
today my heart is opened, and what remains
are the blood and sorrows of an anniversary.

La Primera Vez - The first time

(Felipe Huaman Poma de Ayala, cronista indígena del Virreinato del Perú 1534-1615, ilustración de su obra "Nueva Crónica y Buen Gobierno" Biblioteca del Instituto de Cooperación de Iberoamérica, Madrid, primera referencia de una ilustración de la ciudad de Guayaquil - Felipe Huaman Poma de Ayala, indigenous chronicler of the Viceroyalty of Peru 1534-1615, illustration of his work "New Chronicle and Good Government" Library of the Ibero-American Cooperation Institute, Madrid, first reference of an illustration of the city of Guayaquil)

No hubo tierra ni casa abandonada,
el camino y los árboles fugaron;
sólo el río y la brisa murmuraron
la canción que jamás fuera entonada.

No hubo campo ni noche despejada...
un instante a los dos nos olvidaron;
tus ojitos delincuentes confesaron
la pasión que llegara inesperada.

Como si no existiera el universo:
no hubo mundo ni historia... no hubo verso
ni ciudad, ni oficinas, ni niñez...

no hubo besos ni mesa... no hubo lecho;
sólo un fuego ignorado por mi pecho
ardió al mirarte por primera vez.

(Pintura de los artistas ucranianos
 Inessa Kitaichik & Michael Garmash)

There was no land, no abandoned house;
the road and the trees fled away.
Only the river and the breeze whispered
the song that was never sung.

There was no field, no clear night—
for an instant we both were forgotten;
your mischievous eyes confessed
the passion that arrived unexpectedly.

As if the universe itself did not exist:
there was no world, no history, no verse,
no city, no office, no childhood...

there were no kisses, no table, no bed;
only a fire long unknown to my chest
burned when I looked at you for the first time.

estará quien me espere, estará quien reciba

It is along this road that one reaches love:
a house lit in the middle of life,
with open windows and my dog at the threshold.

My wife by the fire and the table set
will be waiting for me when I knock at the gate.
(Pintura de los artistas ucranianos
 Inessa Kitaichik & Michael Garmash)

I delight in thoughts with wandering eyes,
that silence breaks within her lover’s embrace.

Hope returns when I behold her smile,
and sorrows are buried in the steps I take,
for I know she is mother, she is woman, she is child...

It is along this road that one reaches love.

And to the house alight at the end of the way,
to the river’s raft and to my sheltered bed,
where I keep memories of the most beautiful things.

Nothing is more necessary than knowing one is loved,
and feeling life stir within the chest.

I am far, I know. I am alone, I know.
But I know that when I arrive exhausted at my villa,
to that villa where the warmth of home burns,
there will be one who waits for me, who will receive me—
with feverish lips, with hands of silk,
with ardent gaze, with soul of a nymph,
with anxious arms and fruitful womb
(where children sleep who will bring joys)
to my body thirsty for illusions and peace...

Tonight the night grows long and the willows sigh...
It is along this road that one reaches love.

When the wind strips the flowering countryside,
and my beloved enfolds me in her wedding dress,
and her hand releases the captive caresses,
the curious stars will shine within,
and our house will forever remain alight...

It is along this road that one reaches love:
to love enkindled in the miracle of joy.
